Assistant City Attorney The candidate will provide legal services to the City Council, Boards and Commissions, and management. This is accomplished by representing the City in court, administrative hearings, and negotiations, identifying potential legal issues with City operations, providing legal guidance, and drafting ordinances, contracts, and various other legal documents. Assists with legal documentation and agreements by communicating with stakeholders; conducting legal research; reviewing records, deeds, and other documents; negotiating terms with external attorneys; developing contracts, deeds, loans, and lease agreements; advising City management; and consulting with and advising administrators regarding legal issues. Provides legal consultation, advice, training, and guidance by communicating with City officials, attending meetings, responding to questions, conducting legal research, communicating legal options to the client(s), following-up with City officials to review various legal options and consequences and developing written materials and presentations on legal issues. Provides litigation and other legal representation services by communicating with City officials to understand each case, conducting legal research, coordinating with outside counsel, negotiating early resolution to claims, supervising paralegal regarding litigation files, drafting pleadings, drafting interrogatories and requests for production and admission and responding to same, preparing affidavits, preparing motions and arguments, representing the City in mediation hearings, preparing for trial, representing the City in court, preparing briefs, preparing decisions, discussing results with management, preparing appeals, arguing cases in appellate court, implementing results of the legal outcomes, and representing the City in other adjudicative settings. Prepares legislation and ordinances by determining departments' needs, conducting research into issues, developing strategic approaches, drafting proposed ordinances or legislation, meeting with managers to ensure adequacy of drafts, presenting written summary of the proposed ordinance to the City Council, discussing proposed ordinances/legislation with appropriate legislative body and assisting in the implementation of new ordinances/legislation. Advises the Council, Boards, and Commissions by attending meetings, giving ad hoc advice on procedural and substantive issues raised at meeting, drafting proposed Rules of Procedure and similar documents, rendering formal opinions to Boards and Commissions and drafting decisions in quasi-judicial hearings. Should have Juris Doctorate. Must have 3 years of civil or criminal legal experience and/or related municipal government experience.
