Environmental Compliance Associate
Duties: The candidate will support clients to meet everyday environmental law-related needs, including obtaining permits (air, waste, water), ongoing compliance (e.g., chemical reporting, stormwater management), auditing and compliance program development, responding to government information requests, investigations, and enforcement actions, and citizen suit defense. Advise clients on the environmental aspects of real estate and corporate transactions including identifying and allocating environmental risks, negotiating and drafting environmental provisions of transaction documents, and obtaining and reviewing environmental site assessments and other diligence materials. Will gain exceptional first-hand experience on sophisticated legal matters through working with senior lawyers and clients involving a variety of complex and cutting-edge issues pertaining to natural resources, wildlife, and environmental laws. Close collaboration, working in teams, leadership opportunities, developing deep expertise on issues important to our clients, and meaningful opportunities to build connections with clients early in their career. Become involved with complex, cutting-edge, and interesting work. Within the first year at the firm, participate in client meetings and agency proceedings and receive primary drafting responsibilities on issues of importance to our clients. Meet industry experts, attending trade association meetings, written and presented at multiple trade industry conferences, and had primary drafter responsibilities on novel regulatory compliance issues.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: The candidate should have a J.D. degree from an accredited university and active membership in or commitment to applying for the Oregon State bar. Must have 2-5 years of relevant experience. Must have interest and some experience in matters involving environmental laws, e.g., ongoing compliance, permitting, or enforcement projects. Experience and a special interest in advising clients on air quality and climate regulatory issues arising under federal (e.g., the Clean Air Act) and state laws are a must. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed. Should have good judgment, responsiveness, and perseverance; strong intellectual curiosity; self-motivation; and a commitment to client service and team success.
