Assistant Corporation Counsel The candidate will represent the company in legal proceedings to establish paternity and child support obligations, as well as support enforcement and modification. The Attorney shall also act as Assistant Corporation Counsel in legal proceedings concerning mental and alcohol commitments, as well as guardianships and protective placements. Exercise independent judgment to carry out and direct the legal aspects of child support related establishment, modification, and enforcement duties, as well as the legal aspects of mental and alcohol commitments and guardianships and protective placements. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Corporation Counsel. Approve and sign all pleadings, motions, orders to show cause, stipulations, and other legal documents. Appear in all court proceedings concerning the establishment, modification, or enforcement of support and paternity obligations. Engage in case preparation, including discovery such as interrogatories, depositions, motions to compel and similar activities. Provide legal advice, direction, and training to Child Support case managers, investigators and other Child Support personnel. Correspond and negotiate with other attorneys, recipients, and obligators in matters which are pending before the courts to the extent that those duties cannot be performed by the Child Support staff. Prepare and revise standard legal forms for use by the Child Support staff. Prepare orders following hearings and draft motions and other pleadings. Research and write legal memoranda and briefs as needed or ordered by a Judge, or needed for an appeal. Maintain familiarity with the laws pertaining to paternity and child support. Exercise independent judgment to carry out and direct the legal aspects of representing the public in mental health matters, including mental and alcohol commitments, guardianships, and protective placements. Prepare or assist the Human Services personnel in preparing legal documents necessary to bring matters to court, including but not limited to notices and orders. Provide legal advice, direction, and training to Human Services and Law Enforcement personnel concerning mental health matters. Maintain familiarity with the laws pertaining to commitments, guardianships, and protective placements and the changes thereto. Should have a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin. Experience with family law, child support, paternity, and mental health law is preferred.
