Senior Attorney Duties: Provide legal representation and advocacy for individuals, children and families experiencing homeless through both litigation and policy work. Provide direct legal representation to homeless children and families in education-related disputes, street-based individuals in civil rights claims, and homeless or at-risk persons in other civil legal matters through litigation or administrative processes. This can also include impact or class litigation. Outreach to homeless individuals living on the street and in shelter. Develop and implement policy strategies to address systemic civil rights issues impacting homeless persons, including access to housing, education and alternative court models. Participate in local and state-level coalitions and campaigns to promote policies and laws that impact the civil and human rights of homeless individuals and families. Assist Law Project Director and Associate Director with supervision of staff, litigation and other projects as needed. Develop and conduct trainings for attorneys and other professionals on the legal rights of homeless persons. Assist in monitoring and implementing various consent decrees. Collaborate with other staff of the Law Project and CCH.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree and licensed to practice law in Illinois. 5-10 years of experience in public interest law, including litigation and administrative hearing experience. A working knowledge of public assistance programs. A demonstrated ability to work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds in a culturally sensitive manner. Experience working in high-poverty communities. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong legal research, writing and litigation skills. Strong commitment to social justice. Supervisory experience preferred.
