Paralegal The candidate working under the direct supervision of the Chief Legal Counsel or designee, this is a professional paralegal position responsible for conducting legal research and analysis; preparing associated documents; designing and maintaining a document control system; and determining the factual and analytical research necessary to carry out assignments related to numerous, simultaneously occurring projects. Assist in preparation for and may attend discovery conferences and depositions, meetings with clients and witnesses, internal planning meetings, pre-trials, hearings on motions, evidentiary hearings, court appearances and administrative hearings. Prepare various legal documents for attorney review. Design and maintain master litigation and document control system including organizing proceedings, correspondence, research materials, and exhibits. Assist outside counsel with discovery requests and litigation matters. Assist risk management staff and process claims. Assist the records department with GRAMA related issues. Draft letters, contracts, and other documents as requested by the Chief Legal Counsel. Participate in department committees on as needed basis. Maintain and update various UPD contracts. Conduct legal research and analysis and prepare legal documents and memoranda. Prepare trial and hearing materials for use by the Chief Legal Counsel in trials and hearings, including the preparation and organization of file contents, summaries and cross-indexing of relevant facts, evidence, deposition statements, and other critical documents. Prepare witnesses for hearings and trials. Maintain calendar for hearings, trial dates and other case management requirements to determine informational needs and to address critical deadlines; schedule progress of cases and sets hearings; design and maintain document control system to track contracts, insurance certificates and other documents relating to the day-to-day operations of the UPD; assist the Chief Legal Counsel in complying with court rules of procedure for filing documents. Perform other administrative and paralegal tasks as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

A High School diploma or GED equivalent is needed. Must have certificate/degree in paralegal studies from an accredited institution. College degree is preferred. CLA, CP or CLAS professional certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) is desired. Should have 3 years, full-time paid paralegal experience working in a government attorney's office or in a law firm performing similar duties. 5 years, full-time paid paralegal experience with 2 years full-time experience in a government attorney's office. Work experience as a legal secretary will count towards 2 of the 5 years is preferred. The candidate with experience using Versadex, PACER, and Utah Courts databases. Must have knowledge of: Possess an excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and experience using standard office equipment. Knowledge of Versadex, Westlaw, UCJIS, and court e-filing systems. Knowledge of GRAMA (Government Records and Access Management Act). Demonstrated ability to perform legal tasks using discretion and independent judgment and interact with attorneys and other professionals with administrative competence. Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work activities; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; understand broad objectives and follow general instructions; effectively prioritize and manage own work schedule; exercise independent judgment while evaluating situations and in making determinations; maintain attorney-client confidentiality; work with speed and accuracy; ability to analyze and rapidly appraise facts, evidence and legal research, and effectively organize such material for oral and written presentation by the Chief Legal Counsel.
