Regulatory Compliance Paralegal
The candidate will obtain and maintain all licenses, registrations, and certificates of authority that are necessary for the company to carry out its business activities and to fully comply with all applicable federal and state statutes, regulations, and rules. Such compliance, registration, and licensing activities including Acting as the company’s primary liaison with state insurance departments and other regulatory agencies. Providing guidance and suggestions to the company’s management team and to the Director of Legal Affairs with respect to the company’s compliance with current and proposed federal and state statutes, regulations, rules, and industry best practices. Preparing, filing, and maintaining all required applications, licenses, registrations, certificates of authority, and other related documents with state insurance departments and other regulatory authorities. Responding to and resolving objections raised by the state insurance departments and other regulatory authorities. Ensuring that all the company’s corporate and product/service-related licenses, registrations, and certificates of authority are current. Research, review, and analyze current and proposed state and federal statutes, regulations, and rules to determine the impact of such statutes/regulations/rules on the company’s operations and/or on the company’s product and service offerings. Prepare legislative and regulatory communications and summaries and maintain a database of current statutory/regulatory requirements relevant to the company. Analyze current business practices, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, rules, and industry best practices. Effectively communicate compliance policies and practices to internal business teams. Review, draft, prepare, negotiate, and advise internal clients with respect to a broad array of commercial contracts and other transactional documents. Collaborate and foster positive and professional relationships with internal business clients and become a value-added partner. Assume additional responsibilities, including involvement on committees and special projects as needed or requested. Organize and maintain corporate legal files and contracts databases. Receive, review, and organize incoming requests for legal review of contracts and other legal documents. Manage the execution, distribution, and filing processes with respect to contracts and other legal documents. Assist with the maintenance of contract templates, including creating and updating contract templates and maintaining a database for such contract templates. Perform legal research and prepare legal memoranda, legal letters, and other legal communications. Serve as liaison between various internal departments and work closely with the company’s Director of Legal Affairs and the company’s outside counsel with respect to collecting and organizing documents and evidence for legal proceedings and other legal matters. Perform a full range of legal support tasks and other additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have a BA/BS/BBA and a paralegal certificate, or a combination of a paralegal certificate and relevant work experience. Should have 5+ years of experience working in a paralegal capacity. in-house corporate paralegal experience is preferred. Regulatory compliance experience is strongly preferred. Should have excellent research and organizational skills and superb oral and written communication skills. Should be exceptionally detail-oriented, analytical, and organized. Should have strong legal and problem-solving capabilities, ability to think strategically and work independently. Must proactively identify problems, find solutions, and make sound decisions. Should give good judgment and the ability to make decisions that balance the priorities of the business with legal/compliance concerns. Should have proven ability to handle challenging situations and resolve issues creatively and effectively, excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously, demonstrated ability to ramp up quickly with minimal training and to contribute immediately in a challenging and fast-paced environment, ability to maintain a flexible mindset, willingness to adapt to change, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively, collaboratively, and professionally with others inside and outside of the organization, ability to complete projects in a timely and effective manner with a high degree of accuracy. Possesses a high level of professionalism, integrity, reliability, discretion, and confidentiality. Should have the ability to translate complex business and legal concepts into clear, concise, and compelling plain English, ability to produce high-quality work products in a fast-paced environment, passion for what to do, and a good sense of humor.
