Senior Tax Counsel The candidate will be conducting legal research in all Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas. Excellent research skills and writing ability are required. Tax Counsel will conduct research at the direction of the Director of Tax Counsels but will also be responsible for independently identifying and completing projects. Will be participating in and/or completing/overseeing projects in any of the Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas. Tax Counsels will generally be expected to complete projects based upon overall guidelines and direction without extensive supervision. Tax Counsel will have access to confidential information. Representing Company in tax hearings and before tax authorities and auditors as well as having direct contact with upper management, real estate developers and their attorneys and accountants. Maintaining an excellent working knowledge of taxation in general and updated and in-depth knowledge of Tax Counsel Substantive Tax Areas in which they have specific responsibility. The updated and in-depth knowledge shall be maintained by reading tax cases, rulings, legislation and secondary sources such as tax articles. Advising as to the application of the tax law, recommending solutions, assisting in establishing tax policies and procedures for the Company operating groups or tax department personnel regarding the application of tax law and assisting in identifying and implementing tax savings opportunities. Working with senior management to advise regarding the most efficient structure for acquisitions and for completing tax due diligence to minimize tax liabilities assumed by the Company resulting from acquisitions. JD degree and License to practice law in at least one state is needed. Certified Public Accountant, Masters of Law (Taxation) or Masters in Taxation is advantageous. Should have 2-5 years of tax experience along with strong commitment to practicing in the tax area. Depending upon the needs of the Tax Department at a given time specific tax experience and/or interest in a given area such as tax credits, employee benefits, acquisitions, international taxation, state and local taxation or tax controversy may be requested. Spreadsheet software (Excel or Lotus). Online research (RIA) is needed.
