Assistant Vice President, Tax Duties: Responsible for the day to day operations of the Tax Department. Responsible for all aspects of tax accounting, compliance and tax planning for the life group. A person with a high level of intellectual curiosity and willingness to contribute ideas. Managerial oversight relating to operational policyholder reporting compliance , including year-end reporting as well as shared responsibility related to premium tax compliance, guaranty fund analysis. Reports into AVP Tax Counsel on all policyholder-related matters. Primarily responsible for all aspects of federal and state income tax compliance and related research including managing audits. Will be key point of contact related to International Tax matters reporting into the AVP Tax Counsel. Responsible for tax accounting areas including preparation of annual and quarterly Statutory and GAAP provisions and tax balance sheets. Responsible for timely reporting of all tax requirements to parent company and external entities. Will work conjunctively with AVP of Accounting and Reporting. Participate in a wide array of special projects, including, but not limited to: Software Provision Automation (Phase I), Big Dig tax point of contact, TPA 2 point of contact, including updating of all TPA-related Administrative Guidelines, tax point of contact related to new investments (RAP committee participant) and hands on preparation and/or review of tax-related forecasts, business plan analysis and capital modeling updates. Available to support on other special projects as designated. The incumbent must possess the skills necessary to deal with a wide variety of technical issues, (i.e., Legal, Accounting, Actuarial, etc.) and incorporate the impact of these areas on the overall corporate tax position. Effective communication on all issues related to taxes must be timely and clearly communicated to Senior Management. staff of three to four professionals in a matrixed reporting environment. Responsible for performance reviews, staff development plans, and staff training.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Bachelor or Master degree in accounting, finance, or tax, with 10+ years of experience working in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm. Previous supervisory experience is also required. Excellent interpersonal skills needed to foster teambuilding, act as coach and mentor, and provide motivation. Strong analytical ability is required to analyze tax and accounting information. Demonstrated knowledge of tax software systems; including web-based compliance and research related applications. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant or LLM required. Ability to work well in a team-oriented highly matrixed environment within the tax function. Given the structure of the department, this position requires hands on as well as managerial review and oversight skillsets. This individual will often be the primary prepare on work product they are responsible for delivering. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel is required. Familiarity with tax software packages required. should have solid technical tax and accounting skills including the ability to apply ASC 740 concepts to an insurance group structure. Requires a variety of skill sets including: research, writing, multi-tasking, decision making, deadline focused, issue recognition, and the ability effectively contribute to a team focused environment.
