Supervising Attorney Duties: Supervise legal staff and assist immigration specialists with complex cases, representation, research, and analysis. Support the recruitment of, lead the training of, and co-supervise staff, contractors, and interns. Lead and coordinate peer review; guide staff on cases; assign cases based on staff’s skill capacity or for cross training purposes. Supervise legal program activities, this includes but not limited to: intake, screening and consultations, workshops, case management/caseloads, representations at USCIS, etc. Participate in legal planning and legal supervision of program activities, including events coordinated with allies. Participate in the development or revisions of program materials, such as educational materials for orientations, flyers with legal info for the community, guides used in workshops, and forms used for intake, etc. Support the coordination of non-legal program activities such as educational orientations, workshops, and Citizenship Day. Build structure for legal interns and legal volunteers, and supervise their involvement in legal program activities. Participate in staff meetings designed to collect progress reports, assess community needs, and to update staff on pertinent program procedures and advocacy initiatives. Participate in intake, consultations, and provide case management services. Produce letters, edits correspondence, and other general material related to program services. Handle revenues for own caseloads and enter revenues into internal database. Assist with the accurate projection of program revenues based on staff capacity and skill. Assist with staff evaluations and in acknowledging staff for excellent work, as well as with supervising correction action plans. Develop training plans and provide staff with training, technical assistance and guidance. Provide analysis in peer setting and train staff on legal issue updates, new laws, regulations, and legal proceedings for current and future case references. Maintain law library and train staff on how to use legal resources (i.e. AILA link, CLINIC and ILRC attorney of the day, Immigrant Advocates guides, etc.) Prepare and process SIREN’s staff BIA (Board of Immigration Appeals) accreditation. Develop effective and efficient internal legal systems (case management, software and other products, forms, filing system, etc.) to ensure proper implementation. Evaluate and advise the Director of Immigration Legal Services on office procedures and policies, materials development, and ex/internal communications as they are relevant to immigration laws and regulations, or immigration advocacy efforts. Provide legal structure to program activities, this may include the development of procedures or materials, or revision of program manual. Assist with the development implementation of program measurement tools. Network to obtain external organizational support, to build collaborations that support legal program activities, and/or to refer clients to partners on issues outside our expertise. Develop curriculum and other community-education materials. With staff, conduct presentations on various immigration and citizenship topics. Provide mock presentations in peer setting to ensure staff are trained and prepared. With partners, assist with drafting and reviewing event materials. Act as an advocate and network with other service providers, organizations, and government agencies. Provide legal technical assistance to the non-profit community, when needed, and assist with research and advocacy, as community issues on immigration/trends require. Assist staff in organizing and preparing clients for program advocacy or immigrant initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned by the Immigration Legal Services Director.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Have a U.S. law degree (J.D.) and active Bar membership. Must have 3+ years' experience immigration law, including family based immigration, naturalization, and DACA. Be computer literate in a Windows/PC environment. Have knowledge of supervision techniques, different learning styles, and experience setting a teamwork environment. Must have strong interpersonal and leadership skills. Advanced understanding and ability to interpret immigration laws and regulations. Advanced knowledge in client advising and customer service. Advanced knowledge of case management structures in a legal setting. Committed to the needs of the immigrant community and passionate about immigrant and human rights Bilingual/ Bi-literate in Spanish or an Asian language (Vietnamese preferred) Knowledge of general office operations and must have strong legal office organizational skills. Knowledge of equipment operations and various software programs including word processing, database management, and spreadsheet applications. Have the ability to learn immigration law software. Adept at public speaking and teaching in large groups. Ability to work under pressure and exercise flexibility as needed. Ability to exercise sound judgment Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters related to the program. Ability to identify problems and develop creative solutions both independently and in cooperation with others. Effective oral and written communication skills Ability to maintain a good working relationship with culturally diverse staff and clients. Able, upon hire, to provide own transportation; with adequate insurance and a CA driver’s license, when needed. Willing to work flexible hours as required by program.
