Staff Attorney Duties: Collaborate on legal, organizing and policy strategies with campaign teams for one or all of the grassroots membership organizations: Stand with Dignity (Black U.S.-born New Orleans-based unemployed and underemployed workers (with some statewide work)); Congress of Day Laborers (mostly undocumented Latinx workers based in Louisiana) and the National Guestworker Alliance (multi-ethnic, mostly Latinx, immigrant workers across the U.S. (concentrated in Louisiana) in industries with high guestworker rates, including seafood, agriculture, landscaping and manufacturing) Develop and file litigation in Louisiana and federal courts, in conjunction with national civil rights organizations or local co-counsel, if desired. Develop and maintain relationships with local and national legal allies and experts. Provide direct representation to members in immigration matters, including U visa applications for victims of workplace crimes and applications for their relatives, some of whom are outside the United States, bond hearings of those in immigration detention, asylum applications, adjustments of status, and employment authorization applications. Provide direct representation to members in employment matters with strategic impact, including unpaid wage and overtime claims, OSHA complaints and workers’ compensation.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree and activeBar admission and willingness to take the Louisiana Bar Exam in February 2018. Experience in one or more of the following areas of law or policy a plus: immigration, labor, employment, local policy, criminal defense, or civil rights. Commitment to legal practice in a way that empowers collective vision and action by low-income workers and communities of color. Ability to implement vision, think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment, and lead change. Sense of humor in order to maintain perspective and balance. Spanish proficiency strongly preferred. Spanish speaking ability, if any, and where acquired in cover letter or resume. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
