ProfileArea Underwriting Counsel The candidate: Provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel, agents, and customer(s), related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies. Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance. Develops and maintains effective business relationships with assigned agents and brokers as well as internal and other external clients in order to attract, develop and retain profitable business for the Area. Reviews and approves draft underwriting standards and guidelines from subordinates, in accordance with established company processes. Responsible for communicating information related to underwriting and real estate settlement services from superiors to subordinates. Responsible for monitoring state law and recommending to superiors practice changes as required. Participates with regional underwriting staff in underwriting initiatives around product development. Analyzes key metrics of underwriters to identify areas of improvement and development opportunities. Assignments are broad and complex in nature requiring originality and ingenuity. Operates with latitude for un- reviewed action or decision and has ability to evaluate matters which may have a major bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business. Focus of interaction is at middle and senior manager level. Work independently setting own priorities and objectives with supervisory consultation. Work reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall accuracy. Has specialized expertise for making recommendations to and in collaboration with senior management and/or legal. Requests or issues that are above scope of responsibility and approval limits are referred next level underwriter. Typically will supervise Underwriters and act in a lead capacity providing mentorship and leadership within assigned area. Law Degree required. Must be admitted to practice in state of employment. 10-12 years of title underwriting experience. Must be familiar with real estate law. Must be licensed to practice law, in good standing.
