Managing Clerk Duties: Provide assistance to the Litigation Department functioning as a resource for information relating to court rules, court filings requirements and court procedures for federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate levels with continuing emphasis on establishing and maintaining Department protocols and systemic collection of Firm Work Product Precedents. Respond in a timely and immediate fashion to workflow requests of Firm attorneys and professional staff relating to court rules, court procedures, court filings, filing of new cases, and other court-related tasking as well as requests for work product precedents and court docket information. Participate in the staffing of the Court Procedures Group’s after-hours e-filing rotation. Develop and maintain effective professional working relationships with judges, court clerk personnel, firm attorneys and support personnel. Assist the Managing Attorney and Managing Clerk/East Coast in execution and oversight of Court Procedures workflow tasking in the Washington, D.C., New York and Boston offices. Provide substantive assistance in the preparation of court filings, perform court rules compliance checks on court filings and coordinate filing and service of court documents. As needed, appear in court to obtain procedural orders. Coordinate service of process, including service initiating actions as well as service of subpoenas upon non-party witnesses and trial subpoenas. Communicate with Firm attorneys and outside vendors both orally and in writing to accomplish same. Participate in the management and refinement of Court Procedures knowledge sharing initiatives including creation of searchable indices for work product precedents; compiling biographical and other pertinent data (decisions, best practices, etc.) on federal and state judges; and identifying and organizing outside vendors, i.e., process servers, court reporters and copy services regularly employed by the Firm. At the direction of the Managing Attorney disseminate reports on court matters pertaining to the Litigation Department’s practice, e.g., distributing memoranda relating to court rules, rule amendments, court closings and court personnel.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: JD Degree, membership in good standing of the Bar of a jurisdiction in which the Firm maintains an office, and relevant experience in a major law firm setting. Should have a thorough understanding of the federal and state rules of civil and appellate procedure, and federal and state jurisdiction and the ability to harness that knowledge to identify and analyze issues and reach sound recommendations and conclusions on court rules, procedure and jurisdictional issues arising from the Litigation Department’s daily practice.
