Counsel, Associate Legal The candidate will handle all First Amendment and content related matters for the Company’s television and digital business units. Will have primary responsibility for pre-publication review of investigative news reports, FOIA requests, defamation claims and demands (and related litigation), video licensing agreements, intellectual property matters, subpoena responses, and other legal issues related to the Company’s news content. Will oversee other non-HR litigation matters. Responsibilities: Researching, understanding, applying and providing guidance on First Amendment and intellectual property issues relevant to the Company’s operations. Handling all defamation related demands and claims, as well as overseeing other general litigation activity. Reviewing investigative news reporting prior to broadcast. Providing FOIA and subpoena support to the business units. Negotiating news content licensing agreements and protecting the Company’s intellectual property. Performing other duties in support of the company’s legal department as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: J.D. with a minimum of 4-6 years’ experience in First Amendment matters at a top law firm and/or in-house legal department. Expertise in First Amendment matters and litigation is required. Experience social media, intellectual property, and/or general litigation is preferred. Fluency in English. Excellent communication and writing skills, both oral and written; good critical analysis skills. Ability to research without access to Lexis/Westlaw or secretarial/word processing support. Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
