Assistant General Counsel, Litigation Candidate will be responsible for global litigation matters with emphasis on proactive management of litigation to minimize exposure and manage costs. Duties include handling all aspects of litigation matters from notice of potential claim through final disposition and involve close interaction with Hess business unit personnel, Hess Legal Department personnel, outside counsel, opposing counsel, court personnel, expert witnesses and others. Early Case Assessment-Early involvement and ongoing proactive work to assess, identify and explore legal strategies and to develop matter-specific litigation plans and budgets. Prepare for and participate in all aspects of hearings, motion practice, discovery, alternative dispute resolution, negotiations and trial. Work with internal paralegals and litigation support staff and outside counsel to timely implement legal holds, distribute preservation notices, identify types and sources of potentially responsive materials, preserve, collect, review and produce such materials. Participate effectively as legal member of a multi-disciplined team, taking the initiative to lead and guide the team as to litigation matters, while addressing concerns raised by representatives of the other disciplines. Prepare periodic status reports and regularly update case management database to provide real time matter status information. Interact closely with business unit personnel to develop and implement defense strategy. In consultation with Chief Litigation Counsel, retain and manage external counsel when necessary to assess merits of claims develop defense strategy and manage litigation plan and budget. Supervise paralegals and support staff as necessary.
Qualification and Experience
Candidate should have a J.D. degree and be licensed attorney. 7+ years of litigation experience as counsel in a legal firm or an in-house legal department is essential. Direct hands-on trial experience – preferably as first chair is needed. Experience working for an oil and gas company, either as an employee or external advisor is required. Experience with all aspects of discovery practice including collection and production of ESI as well as with litigation support databases and review projects is required. Should have broad litigation experience and expertise (preferably, in both Exploration and Production and Marketing and Refining matters) and time management skills.
