Staff Attorney - Writing /Appeals Duties: Under the supervision of the Writing Unit Supervisor, will prepare motions, summations and other trial level documents in the Family Courts and IDV parts, as well as appellate briefs in the Appellate Divisions. Will engage in extensive collaboration with trial attorneys and borough directors in connection with motion practice in the trial courts and will appear in the Appellate Divisions of the New York State Supreme Court. Prepare motions and appeals. Work on routine, novel and emerging issues in family, matrimonial and child-protective proceedings. Foster team communication on cases being handled by both a writing and a trial attorney, including making appropriate efforts to meet and discuss the case with the trial attorney. Develop solid grasp of posture of case, procedural history, and what is at issue. Prepare written work that is clear, concise, accurate in citation form and persuasive, with all relevant authority in support. Able to identify themes and the “big picture†in a writing assignment and capable of and comfortable with handling complex issues. Approach issues from a child oriented perspective that effectively conveys the child’s position or appropriately exercises substituted judgment. Manage overall caseload and meet both internal and external deadlines to mitigate unnecessary adjournments or extensions. Able to self-edit and open to being edited by others. Able to edit drafts prepared by others. Foster team work with the social work and paralegal staff to best represent clients. Prepare thorough oral arguments and display professional demeanor and effective/solid advocacy skills in the courtroom with articulate arguments. With supervisory support, evaluate conflicting demands and prioritize. Incorporate the use of technology into the practice. Perform other duties as requested.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Admitted to practice law in New York State. 3 years relevant legal experience is required. A combination of CLC Appellate and other relevant experience will be considered as a substitute for the legal experience requirement. Must have excellent writing skills. Demonstrated skills in advocacy, cultural competence, mediation and interviewing. Demonstrated commitment to public interest and policy. Knowledge of family court, custody, domestic violence and child welfare. Demonstrated experience teaming with colleagues to find solutions to complex situations. Highly effective communication skills (written and verbal), time management, and organizational skills. Display curiosity and eagerness to continue learning new skills, growing professionally, and take an optimistic approach to new challenges. Able to work productively under pressure. Ability to proofread carefully. Demonstrated efficient, persistent and meticulous attention to detail, along with outstanding initiative, and analytical, critical thinking and problem resolution skills. Proven ability to work independently with excellent judgment, diplomacy, professionalism and able to prioritize requests, track and manage multiple requests simultaneously, and meet deadlines. Demonstrated skills as a regular user of software, technology, and online resources including knowledge of databases, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook including calendaring, task, etc.), Internet searches, etc. Demonstrated ability to exercise complete discretion when working with confidential and sensitive information. Proficiency in languages other than English desired.
