Paralegal Duties: Work with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), Office of Counsel. Provide administrative and legal support to the Office of General Counsel staff members. Answer, screen and direct approximately 50 calls per day. Respond to phone inquiries and provide requested information. Record messages to include the date and time the call was received, the person calling contact information, and what the call is concerning. Greet all visitors and provide general information as requested by the visitor. Manage and maintain all office files including draft letters, correspondences, memorandums, and emails. Make copies and convert documents to electronic files. Schedule approximately 20 conference calls and video teleconference calls per week and provide technical guidance to facilitate the call, such as conference call in number, conference room, and notifying participants of the day and time of the call 24 hours in advance. Receive, sort and distribute approximately 25 pieces of mail per day and maintain a log for all incoming and outgoing mail correspondences. Manage all non-technical and technical correspondence and reports using both civilian and military correspondence procedures. Ensure completeness and accuracy of documents to include citations and format are correct, and attachments are properly referenced and included. Prepare statistical analysis and monthly and quarterly management reports, to include cases completed, monthly and quarterly settlement statistics, and trends in approximately 95 cases filled. Make/reschedule approximately 10 appointments per day for each staff member. Process approximately 200 travel arrangements per month via the government travel system including travel orders (to include departure and return actions), itineraries and travel vouchers. Process travel request information for country clearances. Perform legal research using automated systems and research tools on a daily basis. Submit a summary of the research findings to the respective attorney by the close of business. Review, analyze and sanitize/redact approximately 50 files or file information requested per week pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act. Assist in legal research and analysis of factual and legal issues, laws, agency decisions, precedent; cases, rules, regulations, guidelines and policies to determine their bearing on legal issues in policy development, responses to correspondence, telephonic inquiries, email or cases. Respond to approximately 20 general inquiries from attorneys, and from other headquarters personnel per week concerning non-controversial issues pertaining to federal administrative law practice. Draft approximately 50 weekly reports on administrative law complaints, hearings, appeals and oversight activities in the federal sector. Analyze new and existing case law for impact on federal administrative law, hearings, appeals and oversight procedures on a daily basis. Submit a summary of their finding to the COR by the close of business each day. Develop and perform queries for documents, run reports of categories of documents and retrieve documents from internal and external sources.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree. 10+ years’ experience as a paralegal. Proficient with Microsoft Office 2010. Experience working with the Department of Navy (DoN).
