Manager of Associate Development, Staffing & Coordination Duties: Provide an established single resource to support attorney staffing. Identify available attorneys to be staffed on matters with the requisite skill set for a given assignment. Assist senior attorneys with staffing matters, particularly in urgent situations. Continually identify available associates for staffing on matters including redeployment from concluding matters. Serve as a resource to junior and lateral attorneys seeking developmental experiences and diversity of work assignments. Collaborate with local staffing partners to ensure that associates and counsel are fully utilized, have the opportunity to work on a variety of matters with different partners, and achieve progress toward their development goals. Identify emerging knowledge and skills gaps and partner with Talent Development to develop appropriate training opportunities for attorneys. Monitor overall utilization and seek to evenly distribute work across the associate population and ensure that attorneys attain assignments suitable for their experience level and development. Ensure staffing parameters such as reduced work schedules, secondments, leaves of absence, vacations, training time and non-billable tasks are accounted for in work allocation. Review utilization and other data (e.g., exit interviews, attorney evaluation system data) that can be used to influence work assignments and enhance attorney personnel efforts relating to on campus recruiting, lateral hiring, attrition, and training. Utilize other creative staffing techniques and resources when needed including cross-department staffing, staff attorneys, and raise hiring needs when applicable. Be sensitive to firm’s objective to develop and retain talent and promote a diverse and inclusive work place. Support local staffing partners in identifying and facilitating appropriate system enhancements.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: BA and advanced degrees highly preferred. 8+ years of overall work experience, including 5+ years in a practice management or talent development role in a law firm or other professional services firm. Experience supporting the staffing and development of junior talent. Presence, credibility, persuasiveness, and resilience to find creative solutions to complex staffing needs. Technology and data savvy with solid Excel skills. Ability to work with large data sets (utilization spreadsheets, pivot tables, look-ups, etc.). Database experience, as well as experience with PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. Highly organized, able to multi-task, manage time well, and work independently. Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, decision-making and analytical skills. Exhibit superior attention to detail and pride in high quality deliverables. Energized by solving complex problems quickly and developing proactive solutions as a result. Ability to work both independently but within a team environment and raise and address critical issues with a variety of contingents sometimes with differing interests. Availability to address urgent staffing needs that arise after hours and weekends. Must be comfortable engaging in important conversations about attorney job performance and staffing availability with firm’s partners. Work closely with Talent Development, Finance, IT and other functions.
