Senior Legal Professional The candidate will under the oversight of staff attorneys, drafts legal documents and provides recommendations for and responses to legal documents. Will independently analyzes and assesses legal-related issues and proposes possible solutions. Communicates directly with business units regarding legal issues. Solves routine legal problems with minimal direction from staff attorneys. Works with staff attorneys and business units to develop strong legal positions to protect the Company's interests. Work will require special skills and knowledge in litigation and claims. This position contemplates the most senior level of ability and experience in the specialty area, without practicing as a licensed attorney. Directs and conducts factual investigations, including witness interviews, regarding claims and litigation requiring interface with all levels of personnel, both internal and external, in a professional manner, and assists in the management of internal processes for responding to potential and actual claims. Drafts and implements procedures and practices related to document retention, electronic discovery, and evidence collection and preservation by field personnel. Assists in all aspects of the discovery process, including managing litigation holds and document collection and production, and conducting privilege reviews. Drafts legal documents, pleadings, and correspondence under the oversight of legal counsel. Manages and responds to subpoenas directed to the Company, which include negotiating scope and time frame and drafting objections with minimal direction from staff attorneys. Analyzes motions and orders proposed by law enforcement and regulatory authorities and responds. Reviews and summarizes complex legal information and compiles accurate reports and spreadsheets for Company executives and entities external to the Company. Provides claims and litigation support for special projects in various business units, such as Finance, Human Resources, and Customer Service Operations. Provides claims and litigation support for daily operating activities of various business units. Manages client document files, knowledge banks, databases, and performs on-going maintenance and support of web-based tools for the management and support of litigation and claims. Conducts legal research utilizing online legal research databases. Applies legal theories to factual situations and, with limited staff attorney oversight, acts in an advisory capacity to various business units by providing knowledge, training, and expertise on a variety of litigation and liability claim-related issues, including legal strategy development. Provides guidance on alternative courses of action Idaho Power may take to assert or defend a claim. Monitors case schedules and filing deadlines. Handles defense of small claims cases that cannot be handled by counsel. Assists counsel in presenting firm's case at trial and in other court proceedings and preparing witnesses for live testimony. Liaison between outside counsel and business units on collection and bankruptcy-related matters, including assisting with drafting pleadings and proofs of claim and compiling documentation supporting debts owed to the Company to be collected through legal proceedings.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. Bachelor's degree plus additional years toward an advanced degree or a formal education is preferred. Must have 8+ years of experience in litigation and claims, including at least 6 years in a law firm environment or an in-house legal department for a large corporation (a Juris Doctor degree will substitute for three years of relevant experience). Power/energy/oil and gas industry and employment-law experience is preferred.
