Temporary Immigration Attorney The Department of Legal and Support Services works to strengthen work by (1) helping to envision and implement leverage strategies (including strategic litigation) that help win our organizing campaigns; (2) providing technical legal support for policy work; and (3) providing legal and support services to high-need immigrant communities and help meet the immediate needs of firms active members. Responsibilities: Providing individualized assistance to clients we currently represent in affirmative cases and in removal proceedings who are eligible for immigration relief in a broad range of categories including SIJS, Asylum, U/T visas, and others; Assisting with responding to Requests for Evidence, Notices of Intent to Deny, and Notices of Revocation for SIJS cases and U-visa cases as needed; for SIJS cases this may require returning to family court for amended orders; Providing individualized advocacy and assistance to immigrants with complex cases due to criminal records and other issues; Assisting with know-your-rights and other informational workshops to educate immigrant communities about immigration issues affecting their lives. Note: Will join for a period of approximately three months to help cover and move cases while other attorneys are on leave.
Qualification and Experience
Should have 2 years of cumulative, practical, direct experience practicing immigration law including law school internships and clinical experience. Admission (or eligibility for admission) to practice law in New York State in order to be able to practice in family court as needed. Should possess J.D degree. Spanish language proficiency. Interpersonal and organizational skills of the highest caliber. Experience working with populations that make up major portions of Make the Road’s membership – such as documented and undocumented immigrants, women facing domestic violence, members of LGBTQ communities, and youth. Will demonstrate a commitment to social justice issues, and in particular a commitment to assisting low-income immigrants navigate the complex immigration system.
