Intellectual Property Attorney Duties: Reporting directly to the General Counsel, has primary responsibility for protecting intellectual property and managing related risk and compliance matters. Would be a critical part of the Legal Team, also contributing to other areas of legal and business needs in addition to intellectual property matters. Design, implement and manage internal and external processes for: Invention disclosure; patent filing, prosecution and maintenance; trademark registration, prosecution and maintenance; and management of related work by outside law firms and other service providers. Design, implement and manage internal programs related to: protection of trade secrets and other intellectual property; compliance with intellectual property related obligations to third-parties; and employee education and training on intellectual property related matters. Assist with other legal and business needs, including: review and negotiation of license agreements, research collaboration agreements and other contracts; participation in product development teams, and other company initiatives; and advising on other general legal and business matters.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Post-graduate education and work experience in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or related fields. Active member of the State Bar of California or licensed to practice law in another U.S. jurisdiction with eligibility to register with the State Bar of California as In-House Counsel. Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Prior law firm or in-house experience managing process of patent and trademark application, prosecution and maintenance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, self-starter and ability to work as part of a cross-functional team in a collaborative manner. Strong customer service focus and ability to foster solid working partnerships with key stakeholders and project teams. Strong organization and time management skills with flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness to successfully prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously. Excellent judgment with the ability to recognize and effectively communicate issues to legal and general management. PREFERRED: Other relavant legal subject matter expertise such as international data privacy law, healthcare law or FDA regulatory matters. Significant prior experience in management and negotiation of complex transactional matters at a top-tier law firm and as an in-house attorney.
