Legal- Assistant General Counsel- Digital Legal Team- VP The candidate reports to the Managing Director and Associate General Counsel of the Digital Legal Team. The role will involve the following: Issue-spotting and appropriately escalating risks and concerns that may exist with any product, service, project or other initiative, for example, ESIGN, ADA, TCPA, UDAAP/UDAP, data privacy and security concerns. Providing strategic, commercially pragmatic and transparent advice to the business client as to the reasonableness or viability of any aspect of a product or service from a legal perspective. The ability to foster a strong collaborative framework between the legal teams that support the lines of business and other legal centers of excellence within the Consumer and Community Bank (“CCB”) and the Digital Legal team. Partnering with the Digital business team to understand the digital vision and strategy being designed alongside each CCB line of business and apply a legal lens to that vision in order to encourage proactive discussion across CCB Legal, and in turn the early escalation and resolution of any issues or concerns. Collaborating with other functional partners to ensure appropriate awareness and escalation of issues as they arise while being sensitive to confidentiality restrictions given the competitive sensitivity of some projects and initiatives. Managing external counsel when instructed to give advice on a particular issue. Participating in cross line of business initiatives/practice groups as a subject matter expert on issues like ESIGN, or the Digital Legal view of any given law or regulation. Depending on the location of the candidate, some travel may be required, e.g. to Wilmington, Delaware or New York, to spend time with business clients.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have 6 – 8 years post-admission experience in a law firm or in-house. Must be licensed to practice law and a member in good standing in in the state/jurisdiction in which the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction. Prior in-house experience and/or experience with technology/digital matters would be a significant plus. An understanding of the vital importance of information sharing; any tendency to hoard information will not fit is needed. Should have the ability to foster strong relationships; partnering with other lawyers, control partners and business people at all levels to drive to the best result.
