Counsel The candidate will provide legal advice and support to the company and its subsidiaries and manage and develop strategic approaches to litigation matters involving the company nationally. Responsibilities include litigation oversight, management and strategy, as well as advising and counseling clients in matters related to the company's milk marketing and commercial businesses. Matters can include labor and employment disputes and litigation, complex commercial litigation, arbitration, pre-litigation dispute resolution, and engagement with regulatory authorities. Manage the company’s external litigation counsel relationships, including compliance with internal guidelines for the selection, management, case evaluation, fee arrangements, budgets, and billing. Provide counsel, advice, and other legal services to internal business clients; educate internal clients about legal rights and obligations and suggest courses of action in business matters. Provide litigation support, including reviewing and editing of pleadings and motions, reviewing and responding to subpoenas and other demands for information, document production, witness preparation, and reviewing and responding to regulatory investigations. Advise and assist Corporate Human Resources staff with legal matters related to charges and litigation. Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations; make recommendations to management on how to respond to legal issues or proposed changes in laws and regulations. Evaluate findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases. Gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case. Retain and manage relationships with outside counsel. Confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issue to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings. Review and administer business litigation matters to determine whether to litigate or settle; review and edit pleadings and motions; arrange for outside counsel, including budgeting; serve as liaison between company and outside opposing counsel. Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required. 4+ years of litigation experience to include a member in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required. Exceptional record of achievement in developing and delivering commercially-oriented solutions to legal problems and a track record in developing legal strategies to support business growth required. In-house litigation experience preferred. Thorough knowledge of corporate law and transactional law required. Ability: to apply and/or interpret the law; to gather and assemble complex facts or evidence, analyze thoroughly, negotiate as necessary, and implement the proper legal and business solution; to consider both strategic and practical implications for proposed course of action; to demonstrate solid business judgment and decision making skills; to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, for a diverse range of internal and external audiences; to engage effectively with internal clients; to work with accuracy and attention to detail; to maintain confidentiality of information and identity and handle priority and/or sensitive issues with discretion required. Knowledge of and skill with Microsoft Office Suite and company computer systems required. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
