Managing Counsel The candidate will reports to: Assistant Vice President and Associate General Counsel. Will lead a trusted team of legal and paralegal experts charged with enabling integrated and differentiating solutions and protecting Nationwide and its Members. Entail managing a team of two attorneys and one paralegal in the support of significant projects that often require SMEs from multiple legal disciplines (including state insurance law and federal securities law among others) and/or multiple NF lines of business. Advise members of the Office of Finance and the Office of Compliance, support the NF Legal leadership team, and will be accountable for leading/advising several cross-functional NF Committees, including the NF Conflicts Committee and the NF Litigation Committee. Support the leadership teamâ€™s efforts to provide educational programming to NF Legal associates by coordinating efforts such as lunch and learns and periodic CLEs. Support me with respect to updating leadership on significant matters, and accountable for engagement, diversity and inclusion, and other development related support for their respective direct reports. Accountable for mid-year and year-end evaluations, attending required people-leader training and being an advocate and leader for team. Oversee the work of a team of attorneys and may include Paralegals or other legal staff, within a legal specialty in its entirety to ensure that all legal services are provided in one or more major areas. Serve as the chief counsel for one or more assigned areas. Leads works directly on or provides subject matter expertise on significant, high-risk or complex legal matters. Provides the highest level of subject matter expertise for a legal specialty. Initiates cases or projects on behalf of clients. Has primary responsibility to the client. Regularly deals with senior management of the Department or the Company on legal matters within his or her area of legal expertise. Has input into or influence on Company decision-making. On behalf of the Company or the area of expertise, has significant interaction with persons outside of the Company. May receive matters directly from the Chief Legal Officer, but usually receives matters from a Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel or senior management of the Company. Keeps informed of new legislative and case law activity in area of expertise, and keeps Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel and appropriate management of Company informed, as appropriate. Usually manages a group of several attorneys (and possibly related paralegals and support staff) within a single area of law or supporting a limited number of specific business units within the Company. Implements strategy, leads teams of attorneys and/or outside counsel to plan and execute cases, projects or assignments. Makes decisions and furnishes opinions on matters of significant importance to the company and its affiliates. Develops objectives for implementation of Department or Company legal initiatives.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have JD degree from an accredited law school. Should be currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. Jurisdiction. Should have 10+ years of relevant legal experience and some management experience has significant experience with or knowledge of an area of law, and who has direct official management responsibility over several other attorneys. Should have verbal and written communication skills for contacts with all levels of management and clients and/or cases. Significant negotiation skills is essential. Should be a skilled attorney with financial services experience who can effectively facilitate the legal support necessary to address multi-discipline, multi-line of business, matters and projects that impact NF.
