Head of Operations, Legal Duties: Report to the General Counsel and will handle all administrative matters relating to the Legal Group and the delivery of legal services to internal clients, including administrative matters pertaining to finances and budgeting, outside counsel and other vendors, and the legal department’s utilization of information technology. Develop, revise, and oversee the Legal Group’s policies and procedures. Assist in the personnel management of the Legal Group including hiring and performance evaluations. Review and negotiate outside counsel bills and billing arrangements ensuring that standards for service, delivery and costs are met. Review legal department financial reports, accounts payable, and work-in-process reports in order to update the General Counsel regarding the department’s short range outlook and the efficient delivery of legal services to internal clients. Serve as key legal department liaison with the Company’s Accounting, Human Resources, and Information Technology Departments and other Company Management to ensure maximum collaboration and minimal overlap with regard to budgeting, hiring and managing of legal department personnel, the utilization of information technology, and the legal department’s overall compliance with corporate directives. Prepare, and when requested, present materials for or participate in internal meetings, committee meetings, or the meetings with management of other Departments. Manage domestic and international compliance with all applicable rules of licensing, professional conduct and internal policies and procedures. Stay abreast of changes to applicable laws, regulations, rules and legal trends that may impact policies, practices, and strategic direction to the legal department in all jurisdictions. Oversee the development and coordinate the delivery of relevant continuing legal education and training for attorneys of the Company. Global, strategic planning related to the legal department’s use of technology, services and processes, including existing and potential technology/process approaches. Effectively interact with the Company’s IT Department and other Legal Department personnel in planning and implementing new technology projects and software changes. Coordinate the delivery of service from and maintain contracts for of all vendors and service providers to minimize overlap and reduce cost.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: MBA or JD Degree from a top-tier university and an outstanding academic record. 7-10 years of practice in a top-tier law firm, in-house corporate attorney, or in a managerial position, preferably in the legal field or another professional services or consulting organization. Experience managing the financial, IT, HR, and other administrative aspects of a law firm, corporate legal department, or similar enterprise. Experience negotiating a wide variety of vendor and supplier contracts. Experience managing the RFP process for hiring outside counsel and setting up processes for reviewing invoices from outside counsel. Experience with employment and human relations issues pertaining to annual evaluations, performance reviews, compensation issues, hiring, terminating, training, and continuing legal education of legal staff. Experience evaluating and implementing technology processes, procedures, and programs utilized by in-house legal departments. Very strong financial and analytical skills. Very strong verbal and written communication skills. Detail oriented and organized. Able to work well in a team environment. Self-starter who is capable of managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
