ProfilePatent Counsel The candidate will work with the products group to identify patentable inventions. Provide guidance regarding the patentability of inventions. Participate in internal invention-review-and-prioritization processes. Supervise outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of high quality patent assets. Provide technical and legal analysis of patent applications prepared by outside counsel to ensure overall application quality. Take responsibility for ensuring that outside counsel executes a sound prosecution strategy. Work with the engineering and business groups to understand priorities. Generally help to develop and advance the company’s patent strategy. While the focus of this role is on patent-portfolio development, especially at first, this position may also participate in activities relating to acquisition due diligence, patent licensing, patent enforcement, and patent litigation. J.D. degree and 7+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting high quality software patents and building robust patent portfolios required. Less experience may be considered if the candidate has particularly relevant technical experience and/or a demonstrated ability to produce high quality patents directed to a company’s technology crown jewels. Admission to a State Bar, preferably California required. Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office required. At least an undergraduate degree and/or deep experience involving computer software required. Math background and/or specific experience with search technology, GUIs, cloud architectures, computer-network architecture, computer-network security, IT operations, and/or business intelligence are all pluses. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing required. In-house experience preferred. Patent litigation experience preferred.
