Legal Fellow The Fellow will be responsible for: Managing Hospital’s Medical-Legal Partnership, which provides access to justice in the areas of housing, family law, education, benefits, and immigration. Engaging in strategic outreach with local law firms and local legal services organizations. Partnering with all members of the patient care team to identify and resolve legal issues which could have negative impact on the delivery of effective healthcare and treatment to patients and families. Conducting initial assessment of legal matters referred to the Office of General Counsel. Directly handling matters that can be resolved in a short time frame. Coordinating the hand-off of more substantive and complex matters to legal service providers and law firm partners; tracking all such cases to ensure needs of patients and families continue to be met. Tracking all cases and maintaining databases relating to legal services provided on-site and referred out, and tracking case outcomes. Providing support to the Office of General Counsel regarding patient care matters. Providing education and training to clinicians in substantive legal topics that impact effective delivery of health care services and treatment. Performing other legal duties as requested. Will serve as a legal advocate for patients and families who cannot afford an attorney and who are experiencing legal problems that are creating barriers to the delivery of effective healthcare and treatment. Will serve as the hospital’s point of contact for the in-house Medical Legal Partnership, other legal service organizations, and law firms that partner with the hospital on these matters. Will receive referrals from members of the General Counsel’s office and from hospital clinicians.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Completion of a JD Degree, and having sat or passed the Bar Exam, preferably in the State of Massachusetts. Demonstrable affinity and/or set of experiences in the area of child advocacy.
Term: 2-3 years.
