Associate General Counsel – Litigation Duties: Manage all aspects of affirmative and defensive litigation and arbitrations involving the company. Provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations and responses to government inquiries. Provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws applicable to health care, and on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization. Protect the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation. Acquire and deepen knowledge of the health care industry and the specific business practices of this particular business within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders. Provide a full range of litigation and pre-litigation advice and services with the opportunity to develop expertise in a wide range of areas in the health care space. Reports directly to Deputy General Counsel Manager.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree. 7+ years of litigation experience at a law firm or in-house position. Proven success in effectively communicating and collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment. Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business needs consistent with company mission and organizational values. Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts. Ability to identify risk and opportunity, drive results, and communicate effectively with business leaders. Preferred: Significant trial, arbitration and negotiation experience. Experience with regulatory agencies and administrative experience with state insurance regulations. Strong understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry, including an understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development. Familiarity with ERISA, False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law and other healthcare laws and regulations, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and commercial lines of business and HIPAA.
