Burns & Levinson Winds Down After Lawyer Departures
In the most significant of these exits, a 25-lawyer group left to join Blank Rome and establish a new Boston office. Similarly, another 17-lawyer contingent moved to ArentFox Schiff, while others found new homes at firms such as Locke Lord, Polsinelli, Rubin and Rudman, and Verrill.
McCarter & English and Barclay Damon Bring on Burns & Levinson Lawyers
In response to Burns & Levinson's wind-down, McCarter & English and Barclay Damon announced on Monday they are hiring several of the firm’s attorneys. McCarter & English will be adding seven partners whose practices span trusts and estates, real estate, and business litigation. In addition to the attorneys, nine professional staff members will also be joining the firm. These additions strengthen McCarter & English’s ability to serve life sciences and high-tech companies in the Boston area.
Barclay Damon, a law firm with 300 lawyers across multiple offices, including New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C., is taking on ten more attorneys specializing in intellectual property and real estate. This move is expected to boost their growing presence in the Boston market.
Failed Merger Talks
As Burns & Levinson faced challenges, the firm entered into merger discussions with several other firms, including Barclay Damon. While the firm had a profitable business and competitive rates, managing partner Paul Mastrocola explained that the offers didn’t work for the firm’s remaining partners or its diverse practices. With no merger on the table, the remaining lawyers are now expected to join other firms.
John Langan, Barclay Damon’s chair, confirmed that despite initial discussions of a combination with Burns & Levinson, the two firms ultimately couldn’t reach an agreement. Langan noted the importance of Boston’s booming technology and life sciences sectors, attracting more law firms to the city in recent years.
Boston Legal Market Heats Up
Boston’s status as a hub for life sciences and technology has made it an increasingly attractive market for law firms. As McCarter & English’s Boston managing partner Maria Laccotripe Zacharakis emphasized, law firms must stay vigilant in a more competitive market. Besides McCarter & English and Barclay Damon, several other prominent firms, including Blank Rome, Paul Hastings, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, and Wiggin and Dana, have recently opened offices in the city.
This influx of new legal talent and firm expansions is reshaping Boston’s legal landscape, with firms positioning themselves to capture a growing client base in the life sciences and tech industries.
