Womble Bond Dickinson and Lewis Roca Announce Merger to Create 1,300-Lawyer Firm
In a significant development within the legal industry, Womble Bond Dickinson and Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie have announced a merger set to take effect on January 1, 2024. This merger marks the third major law firm combination in less than a week, signaling an ongoing consolidation trend within the legal sector.
A Combined Force of 1,300 Attorneys
The merger between Womble Bond Dickinson and Lewis Roca will result in a firm boasting over 1,300 lawyers, operating across 37 offices in the United States and the United Kingdom. The firms' combined gross revenue exceeded $742 million last year. Post-merger, the firm will continue under the Womble Bond Dickinson name, which already has an established global presence.
Womble’s Expansive Reach and Lewis Roca's Regional Strength
Womble Bond Dickinson, the larger of the two firms, brings nearly 1,100 attorneys to the table. It originated from a transatlantic merger in 2017 between North Carolina-based Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice and U.K.-based Bond Dickinson. The firm has a significant presence in both regions, with 640 attorneys in the U.S. and approximately 450 in the U.K.
Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie, based in Phoenix, adds 220 lawyers from key locations in Colorado, Nevada, California, and Arizona. The merger is expected to leverage the strengths of both firms, enabling broader legal service coverage and expertise.
Leadership Transition in the New Firm
With the merger, Womble's Merrick Benn, who was already set to take over as U.S. Chair and CEO in January, will assume the role of Chair and CEO for the combined firm. Meanwhile, Lewis Roca's Managing Partner Kenneth Van Winkle will take on the role of Vice Chair. The leadership team has expressed confidence in their ability to integrate their firms and capitalize on the synergies of the merger.
Recent Mergers Signal a Trend in the Legal Sector
This merger is part of a growing wave of consolidations within the legal field. Earlier in the week, Ballard Spahr and Lane Powell announced their upcoming January merger, which will create a firm of 750 lawyers under the Ballard Spahr brand. Additionally, Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders and Locke Lord revealed their plans to merge next year, forming a 1,600-lawyer firm to be named Troutman Pepper Locke.
The ongoing trend toward law firm mergers reflects the increasingly competitive landscape of legal services, as firms seek to scale and broaden their reach to better serve clients in multiple jurisdictions and industries.
