The Impact Of Ai On The Legal Industry: Concerns Over Job Opportunities For Law School Graduates
An experienced attorney with more than 20 years of practice has cautioned that the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) could ripple effect on the legal industry, potentially denying law school graduates entry-level jobs and depriving them of the necessary experience to become skilled lawyers. Bryan Rotella, the founder of GenCo Legal, expressed concern that AI may outsource many tasks traditionally handled by entry-level lawyers, exacerbating the current student debt crisis. Rotella noted that AI is used in the legal sector for functions such as drafting and reviewing contracts, document scanning, and legal research, leading to improved productivity, error reduction, and client cost savings. As AI continues to be incorporated into various fields, including healthcare, financial services, and law, Rotella suggested that there are many ways in which it can support professionals.

Bryan Rotella, the founder of GenCo Legal, has noted that many basic legal tasks, which paralegals rather than attorneys have traditionally handled, could now be done using AI. While using AI for these tasks could increase efficiency and reduce costs for law firms, Rotella is worried that this approach could deprive legal assistants and young lawyers of the training they require to gain experience. According to Rotella, there needs to be more clarity about the level of preparedness of law graduates, who may only be ready to pass the bar exam if they are fortunate and not necessarily to practice as lawyers.

According to Bryan Rotella, with the increasing adoption of AI in the legal industry, newly graduated lawyers may discover that the technology is better equipped than they are for the job that law firms are hiring them to perform. This could leave them without the necessary experience to advance in the profession. In 2022, there were over 115,000 students attending law schools in the US, which equates to roughly one law student for every ten active lawyers in the country. Furthermore, law firms have started downsizing their workforce due to decreasing demand for legal services, rising costs, and a challenging economic climate. Rotella, who specializes in providing personal counsel to businesses, believes that if law firms require fewer paralegals to carry out their labor-intensive, entry-level duties, recent graduates may need help finding work even with a degree. This development could have a significant impact on the number of law students. Rotella suggests that it might be good to reset and re-evaluate who is genuinely interested in pursuing a career in law instead of simply attending law school as an option after college.
