2017 LawCrossing Salary Survey of Lawyer Salaries in Best Law Firms

A new year means it is time for a new report. LawCrossing has released their latest Salary Survey Report for 2017. A lot of changes have taken place in the past year regarding lawyer salaries and bonuses in BigLaw and even in smaller boutique firms. By collecting data from roughly 200 law firms, a lot can be learned about the status of salary, bonuses, summer associate positions, and more.

With Cravath Swaine & Moore starting the trend last year by increasing their starting salary scale, other law firms have been upping their rates ever since. Those salaries were not the only things that increased either. Come bonus time, Cravath announced they were increasing their bonuses as well. With those announcements, law firms of all sizes have been doing what they can to improve their own rates. The highest starting rate at any law firm is $180,000 for a first-year associate but can drop down to $70,000 as a base salary. Generally, law firms that have lower rates have opportunities for big bonuses to make their firm stay competitive with the top rates.

The charts are arranged in alphabetical order so there is no preference. There are categories for each year’s rate as well as associate bonuses and summer associate salaries, when available.
