Baker & McKenzie Names New Asia Head
Summary: Hong Kong based Milton Cheng has been named the managing partner for Baker & McKenzie's China, Hong Kong, Korea and Vietnam offices. Cheng, until now, was the head of the Asia-Pacific M&A group, and also the co-head of the law firm's corporate group in China and Hong Kong. He also led the the REITs practice in Hong Kong. Cheng succeeds Paul Tan as head of Asia for Baker & McKenzie.
The announcement of Cheng's appointment as Asia head of Baker & McKenzie follows on the heels of recent leadership changes that were announced at London annual meeting of the firm. In major leadership shuffling and reconfirmations, the law firm extended the tenure of Eduardo Leite for two more years as chairman. Other major changes in leadership that took place this month include the appointment of Bruce Hambrett as chair of Asia Pacific, Gary Senior as chair of Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Jim Holloway as chair of North America.
Also, Hong Kong's Gary Seib was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the law firm, among others.
Cheng is a member of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission's Committee on REITs and a member of the Council of Governors of the Asia Pacific Real Estate Association (APREA). Acknowledged as "The Pioneer of Hong Kong REITs," Cheng has been consistently named a leading corporate lawyer in Hong Kong by various legal and industry directories, including Chambers Asia, The Asia Pacific Legal 500 and IFLR1000.

He joined the Firm's London office in 1990 as a trainee solicitor, was relocated to join the Hong Kong office in 1993 as an associate and became an equity partner in 2004. He has a breadth of experience, practicing in the areas of REITs, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and financial services regulation, acting for Hong Kong-listed REITs, financial institutions and intermediaries, multinational corporations and asset managers across the Asia-Pacific region.
Cheng graduated from King's College, London with a bachelor of laws (first class honours) in 1989. He is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong, and England and Wales.
