Angela was born and raised in Pensacola, FL. She grew up on her grandparents' rural homestead with her mother, father, and brother. Angela explained:
"We were not rich, but our parents made sure that my older brother and I never went without. My father worked very hard at Monsanto to support our family. He worked his way up in the company and mastered his skills as a mechanical/electrical engineer. He did not have an engineering degree, but he could school a Texas Tech grad. My mother has two bachelor's degrees, a master's and a doctorate. She worked as a CPA before accepting a teaching position at the University of West Florida where she retired as a professor in the Accounting and Finance Department. I admire my parents for all of their accomplishments. My parents divorced when I was 16 years old and both remarried. However, they have remained friends who still love and care for each other."
Angela has a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from the University of West Florida (UWF). At UWF, she was a member of Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society, Psi Chi Honor Society, Northwest Florida Psychology Association, American Psychological Association (APA), APA Graduate Student Association, and APA Psychology and Law Society. From 1998 to 2000, she served as Vice President of the Golden Key International Honor Society and Vice President of the Student Psychological Association. She was a member of UWF's Forensic Psychology Research Team and worked on a project at the University of Florida entitled "The Relationship of Serotonin Transporter Sites to the Expression of Stereotypic Behavior in Deermice" for the National Science Foundation program in psychobiology.

At MC Law, from 2012 to 2013, Angela served as the Vice President of Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association Student Chapter. She is currently a member of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society, the American Bar Association, and the Student Liaison Committee Member of the Lawyers & Judges Assistance Program. Angela is also involved with several legal societies, which include societies related to health, environmental, animal, and entertainment law.

From January to April 2013, Angela participated in an externship program at the Children's Justice Center in Mississippi. She noted:
"I had the opportunity to observe a murder trial in which the father was convicted of murdering his 13 month old daughter. My task was primarily to observe and analyze jury members' behavioral responses to testimony of medical experts.

Also, using my past experience counseling physically and/or sexually abused children, I was able to provide feedback after observing forensic interviews conducted with children alleging abuse. Additionally, I wrote case summaries on the admissibility of written and oral testimony of forensic interviewers and non-treating physicians."
From May to July 2013, Angela was involved in an externship program at the Office of State Public Defender, Indigent Appeals Division in Mississippi. While admitted to Limited Practice, she was able to assist in drafting an appellate brief submitted to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Angela also reviewed trial transcripts to identify issues providing a legal basis for an appeal. Additionally, she wrote synopses of Mississippi Supreme Court and Appellate Court decisions.

Since March 2013, Angela has been a legal assistant. She drafts motions, discovery requests, legal memorandums, and assists during court hearings and arraignments. Angela also conducts legal and non-legal research and interviews witnesses. Since September 2013, she has interned for the Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel in Mississippi. Angela reviews and analyzes case files, trial transcripts, evidentiary documents, mitigating factors, and court opinions used in the preparation for trial and appellate process in order to identify and research potential issues providing a legal basis for post-conviction relief for death row inmates.

When asked about her personal interests, Angela stated:
"Horses are my passion. I ride every chance I get and dream of the day I will own horses again. Other personal interests include: my dog Delilah, hiking, health food preparation, weight lifting, dancing, museums, live plays or shows, and movies (with popcorn). Also, doing anything or nothing at all with family and close friends."
She is currently reading Elizabeth Letts' The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, The Horse That Inspired a Nation. Angela is a frequent visitor at Mississippi's Table One Hundred.

Angela's Academic Law Career and Plans for the Future

Why did Angela go into the law? She acknowledged:
"I've always been interested in law and the legal system. But the human mind fascinates me; so, I decided to pursue a career in psychology. As a counselor, I interacted with the legal system in various capacities including representing adolescents and psychiatric patients during court hearings and providing written reports to judges and attorneys. It became obvious to me that adding a law degree to my skills and experience in psychology would allow me to become a part of the legal system that I saw play such a significant and powerful role in the lives of patients and clients.

Additionally, I have had the privilege of serving on one federal and two state juries. I would be a professional juror if possible. Also, I have been deposed multiple times. The last time I was deposed, the attorney deposing me asked if I had ever thought about going to law school. He stated that I was more prepared for a deposition than many attorneys are when they appear in court. He also said that I had a unique ability to identify important details while being able to put them all together, creating the big picture.

Over time my initial interest in law grew into a fascination. I know I can be an exceptional attorney."
What are the areas of the law she hopes to practice? Angela noted:
"I thought that during law school, I would be captivated by one or two areas of law. What I learned was that there are many areas of legal practice that captivate me. This is extremely beneficial because it provides me with more options as I pursue a career, but frustrating when people ask me what type of law I want to practice. I would like to be proficient as a transactional and litigation attorney. At the same time, I would be happy in a non-traditional legal position.

One thing I do know is that I would like to specialize. Currently, I'm not completely sure what that specialization will be, but I'm eager to identify and pursue it. Considering my personality and attention to detail, I would be very good at regulatory and compliance work.

Also, I am an ideal candidate for a position that requires a great deal of exposure to horrific events or crimes (sex crimes, child abuse, child trafficking, mass disasters, etc.). I have a unique ability to compartmentalize, so I could successfully pursue a career in that type of work without burning out. I understand a lot about how the many perpetrators function. My counseling duties exposed me to the details of horrible abuse and torture. Photos of victims do not cause me to turn my head. I am able to deal with these issues in a way most are not able to, which is one of my greatest abilities. After a long career in this area of practice, I could begin providing expert testimony."
Angela shared her future aspirations. "Of course, I aspire to have personal success and happiness. More than anything, I want to continue making a positive impact on the lives of others. I don't need to save the world; I just want to serve each individual or organization to the best of my ability."

When asked about her key accomplishments, she said:
"Samantha, 15-years-old, was one of my patients when I worked as a mental health therapist at a residential psychiatric hospital for adolescents. She had made multiple serious suicide attempts. I counseled Samantha for a year before she was able to return home. One day, a few months after she was discharged from the residential treatment facility, she called and said 'Ms. Angela, I never thought I'd ever say it, but I'm happy. Thank you.' Success stories such as Samantha's are by far my greatest achievements.

Also, my parents, brother, and extended family are proud of the person I am. This means the world to me."
Angela talked about her main strengths and skills that she is planning on using to further her career goals. She asserted:
"Holding a master's degree in psychology and 10 years of professional experience will prove to be an advantage. I have been extremely fortunate to have had unique and challenging professional opportunities and experiences, and look forward to what the future holds.

A career in psychiatric hospital, behavioral health, and government systems has allowed me to develop and sharpen tactics, skills, abilities, and proficiencies that will quickly advance my capabilities as an attorney. My experience in a highly regulated industry taught me how to interpret, apply, and comply with the multitude of laws and regulations. Through these experiences, I have gained an understanding of how laws, regulations, and regulatory agencies affect the day to day operations of an organization.

I have gained extensive and invaluable experience working with clients, attorneys, judges, insurance company representatives, agency employees, law enforcement, and others. I am able to establish and maintain productive professional relationships, and have developed a reputation for dignity, reliability, and professionalism based on my camaraderie, work ethic, and work product."
As for her weakness, she admitted:
"I am an excellent mental health counselor. I worked with one of the most difficult populations in a number of capacities and excelled. After being extremely knowledgeable, skilled and successful in that profession, it is uncomfortable to feel like a novice again as I enter the legal profession. While I know the feeling is a product of a simple lack of experience, not a weakness, it has proven to be challenging for me. I'm looking forward to attaining the status of a top-notch legal professional."
Law school itself can sometimes be stressful, so Angela shared what she does to relieve stress. "Generally, I don't get stressed easily, but I do have methods to implement in the event I do begin to experiencing stress. I taught stress management for over 10 years, so I have knowledge of and utilize many forms of stress management from guided imagery to weight lifting."

How does Angela handle new assignments? She disclosed:
"First, effectively communicate with the person assigning the project. Then, maintain an open line of communication throughout the duration of the project. Ensure that I clearly understand what is expected of me and when the assignment is due. Educate myself on aspects of the project in which I am unfamiliar. Determine level of priority among the new assignment and existing assignments. Develop a timeline and actions plan, while calculating time for potential unexpected interference. Complete project and ask for constructive criticism in order to continue to improve."
Where does she derive her confidence? "Recognizing my past achievements, positive self-talk, encouraging words from family and friends, and music (e.g., Hall of Fame by the Script feat. will.i.am.) are some sources of confidence. Being completely prepared and fully knowledgeable provides an abundance of confidence in any situation."

Three Wishes to Live By, Volunteer Experience, Coping with Fear and Great Achievements

If Angela had three wishes, what would she wish for? "1) Security and happiness for my family and friends, as well as for myself. 2) To own horses again and barrel race. 3) To pay off all of my debt (student loans)."

She discussed her volunteer experience. Angela stated:
"Once I became licensed (in 2005) to practice independently in Florida, I began providing pro bono mental health counseling, primarily to abuse victims and low-income clients. I recently received a Mississippi mental health counselor license and will continue providing mental health services to those in need. Some additional past experiences include the Rape Crisis/Trauma Hotline, Homestead Retirement Village and the Humane Society."
In regards to handling fear, Angela expressed:
"This is a difficult question to answer because there are many forms of fear triggered by a multitude of situations, objects, etc. When I recognize that I am experiencing a state of fear, I begin to examine the source of the fear. I try to determine if my fear is in response to real, anticipated, or imaginary stimuli. I also examine if the stimuli is imminent or distal. I engage in deep breathing exercises to control physiological responses to fear. To mentally calm myself, I use cognitive messages specific to the fear invoking situation. I practice rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), which I have found to be an extremely effective form of therapy."
Is there any particular achievement or activity she would like to share with our readers? Angela revealed:
"Barrel Racing and Pole Bending: When I was 12 years-old, my parents finally accepted my love for horses and got me a green broke Quarter Horse named Docs Royal Forty. I had been riding for a few years, but still had a lot to learn. Together, Forty and I learned how to barrel race and pole bend. Over the next five years, we continued improving our skills. We soon began winning ribbons, trophies, belt buckles, and cash prizes. Sadly, Forty was only eight years old when he passed away. The day he died is still the worst day of my life.

I am of Creek Indian decent and a member of the Flying Eagle Creek Indian Dancers. I enjoy performing with the group, comprised primarily of my family members, and competing in Native American dance."
Legal Role Models, Personal Philosophy, Challenging Situations and Facing Obstacles

Does Angela have any legal role models? She said:
"I have been fortunate enough to meet a few attorneys who have been practicing for 35+ years. These gentlemen speak of a time when attorneys showed utmost respect for each other, the legal system and their clients. These men continue to carry themselves with dignity and loyalty. They have character, grace and sophistication. As I pursue a legal career, I will conduct myself in a professional manner hoping to achieve the admirable reputation these men have deservingly acquired in the community. These gentlemen are my role models."
What is her personal philosophy? "We all make mistakes or poor decisions and that is okay. We are not defined by our past. Instead, we are defined by who we are in the present time. In our future, we should strive to be the person we, individually, want to be defined as."

The future attorney talked about what she believes holds more truth in light of her personal philosophy. Was it fate or choice? "Choice. Even when fate comes into play, you still choose how to act or react. You always have a choice, even if you don't believe you do."

What kind of situations and people is Angela attracted to? "I am not so much drawn to 'situations' as I am the people involved. It's the people that truly and ultimately make the situation what it is. I appreciate and like to have genuinely good people in my life, and those who are non-judgmental and open minded. I also greatly appreciate conversing with a 'humble genius.'"

Maintaining a Balanced Life, Most Influential Traveling Experience, Favorite Quote and Final Thoughts

What is Angela's top priority outside of work? She replied:
"My top priority outside of work is to maintain a balanced life. Being in good physical and mental health allows me to function to the best of my ability. Therefore, I am able to serve clients, family, friends, and sometimes strangers most effectively, while still maintaining the ability to serve my own needs. This is a concept similar to a flight attendant instructing each passenger to put his/her oxygen mask on before assisting others.

Also, I have a 4 ½ lb Yorkshire Terrier named Delilah who could not possibly be more rotten and spoiled."
She discussed her most influential traveling experience. Angela explained:
"The most influential experience was when I traveled to Haiti 48 hours after the January 2010 earthquake. I was the mental health specialist on a disaster medical response team. I provided mental health services to U.S. Embassy employees, Haitians (via a translator), and medical assistance team members. Being in the midst of such turmoil is something you have to experience to truly understand. On the lighter side, I will always remember studying for the LSAT on the front steps of the U.S. Embassy. I took the LSAT about a week after I returned home."
Angela's favorite quote is by her mother, Sarah Lee Frank. She claimed, "When I started law school, my mother searched for an inspirational quote to fit the situation. Ultimately, she wrote one for me. 'When the destination is big, so are the bumps in the road.' I read this quote countless times over the last two years, and shared it with others."

Is there anything else you care to share professionally or personally? Angela stated:
"I do not take offense to constructive criticism. Instead, I view criticism as an opportunity to gain insight and make improvements if necessary. I have a strong sense of self and am not easily offended.

I am a professional. I am aware that my actions are a representation of myself, as well as the person or entity that employees me. My reputation is extremely important to me. I understand that my reputation is reflected by and through my actions and reactions in both personal and professional settings, as well as the quality of my work product.

I am willing and able to relocate to anywhere in the world, as long as I can take my little puppy-dog, Delilah.

I will take (and pass) the Mississippi Bar in February 2014 and the Florida Bar in July 2014. I am willing to taking additional bars if needed."
