In order to begin developing a referral list, or a chart of your network, you may wish to complete the following worksheet. This should help you get organized. Consider this form as something that will continually be expanded as you consider referral sources—

Family members:

Organizing Your Networking File

It is very important to keep your referral material in a format that is easy to use. Consider a card file, computer, or notebook format. If you meet with individuals in your network list, take notes about the meeting. Think about your impressions of the person and the position. Could you see yourself handling this type of responsibility? If you write down your feelings about the position early in the networking phase, it can be an excellent way to avoid romanticizing the position later. This will also help you when you begin to assess your career options and as you make decisions concerning what fields and positions you intend to pursue.

Make sure that you have accurate mailing addresses for your network group so that you can send them appropriate correspondence. Always remember to keep the people on your contact list informed about the progress of your job search. Also, make sure to send a prompt thank you to these individuals for their assistance in your job search.

Compile these lists separately. Make sure to list as much detailed information as possible concerning these referral sources. Consider sharing your lists with friends, family, and spouse. Seeing these names and employers listed may assist your referral sources in providing additional names.
