Hurricane Sandy causes courts and law firms to be closed
With the depredations of Hurricane Sandy, and courts being closed from Virginia to New York, law firms, which are still not used to virtual workspaces faced larger than usual discomfiture as competitors with the ability to coordinate and work from remote locations forged ahead by keeping operations running. As reported by Reuters, on Monday, major law firms, which are used to working through virtual networks kept working with skeletal crews in their offices and attorneys working remotely over the Internet.

Big law firms like Cahill, Gordon & Reindel, Hadley & McCloy closed down their offices while other law firms, too followed suit. Courts remained closed from Virginia to New York on Tuesday, and even the Washington Supreme Court shuttered down. Federal district courts in Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia as well as the Courts of Appeals for the Second, Third and D.C. Circuits closed down.

Mort Pierce of White & Case said in an email that people were working remotely, and “In the past, in bad storms, if something had to get done, and people had to be in the office to get the work done, they always found a way … I assume it will be no different this time.”

Only this time around, more people are working remotely and depending on the Internet than ever before. Cadwalader kept updating its attorneys on technology safeguards and backup systems via email and a telephone hotline, while other law firms kept up work and contact through digital networks. Also law firms which had offices outside the path of Hurricane Sandy relied on the data centers at those offices to keep functioning. At Reed Smith, the Global Customer Center in Pittsburgh kept up customer relations by answering telephones and handling other matters that would have been ordinarily handled by offices closed for Hurricane Sandy.
