Personal Life

Richard Foltz is the owner and manager of Liberty & Justice Paralegal & Mediation Service, which is a paralegal and mediation service located in Irvine, California. He specializes in mediation and family law. Richard was born in Phoenix, Arizona but was raised in New Jersey and California. Although the paralegal grew up with a small family; only has one sibling, he eventually had three kids and became a grandfather to four grandchildren.

The paralegal attended Stockton State University and earned his Paralegal Degree from Newbridge College. He enjoys the Blues and Rock and Roll music, and loves sailing the California coast. Richard sails frequently to Catalina Island. The paralegal recommends a book called Tinkerbelle, which is about the author, Robert Manty, who sails from Massachusetts to England in a 14.5 foot boat.

When Richard isn't working or sailing off the coast of California, he roots for the New York Yankees. He use to play triple AAA baseball with the Yankees and his favorite athlete is James Augustus "Catfish" Hunter. Richard met and worked with Hunter and he thought the pitcher was a “neat guy.”

Talking About Athletes

Another pitcher Richard respects is Noland Ryan. The paralegal confirmed that the legendary pitcher recorded 7 no hitters during his lustrous career. No other pitcher has come close to this record.

The mediator was asked to comment on the Roger Clemens case. Richard said if you don't play by the rules, you have consequences. He proclaimed there was “no question in his mind” that Clemens “committed the crime.”

The former triple AAA athlete also gave his opinion about athletes who abuse drugs. He simply declared, “Do athletes still do it, sure.”

Volunteer Activities, Non-Profit Organization, and Greatest Achievement

Richard is very proud to volunteer in small claims courts to do mediation. He stated this was “tough to do because emotions run high.” The paralegal likes to volunteer in small claims courts since he learns something new each time he steps into the courtroom. The father of three children acknowledged he learned “how to assist people [and help them] overcome their differences and the reason why they are in court to begin with.”

The former athlete's favorite non-profit organization is his church. Richard admires how the church helps people with financial, drug, emotional, and marriage problems.

The proud grandfather admitted his greatest accomplishment is his kids and grandkids.

Richard's Liberty & Justice Judicial Business

The sailor was asked about his most memorable education experience. He clearly recalled how, in 1974, there was “almost a riot” while he attended Stockton State University. Richard explained how the university gave out grants to underprivileged students. He stated that African American students felt they were treated unfairly. Although riots were avoided, you could feel the tension in the air.

Richard used to own his recording studio and was an independent consultant for marketers. He decided to become a legal staff member 20 years ago because he bought a business called The California Nut House and “got sandbagged on the deal.” Richard went bankrupt and wanted to know more about the law and decided to go to law school.

So what is the best part of the paralegal's job? The proud grandfather said the best part of his profession is when he can assist “extremely stressed out” individuals and “can get them out of their problem and put them back in a healthy state of mind.”

The paralegal was asked what he thought of the field today. The straightforward mediator stated he “thinks the field has a bad rap because attorneys charge outrageous fees and don't return calls.” He added that sometimes attorneys make things worse.

What would Richard change about the industry? The paralegal believes the law needs to be reformed and there needs to be some type of regulatory body governing Paralegals much the same as the State Bar governs Attorneys. He would like to see conformity in the courts so attorneys and paralegals can get things done. Richard also mentioned he would like continuity across the state courts.

The sailor gave his advice to new and recent legal staff members. He said, “Do your homework. Measure twice and cut once. Make sure you know what you are doing.” The grandfather reflected on how hired help broke the cords of his blinds and damaged the house. Richard claimed, “They clearly did not know what they are doing. Do your homework.” He pointed out that; in the paralegal field you must hold yourself to a “higher standard of duty and care.”

Many readers are interested in what motivates Richard. The former athlete announced that his “business keeps him using his brain.” He continued to say there are “always different things everyday.”

Where will Richard be in five years? The grandfather quickly said he will be “retired.” However, the paralegal revealed that he can “stay active in his business to a degree.” He noted how “case loads and people have on going business” and that the “status with case loads is you finish the job for people.”

If the paralegal wasn't in this profession, what would he be doing? The Blues and Rock and Roll enthusiast declared he would be back in the music business. He admires Eric Clapton and asserted he gets his musical influence from the English guitarist and singer-songwriter. Richard, however, left the music business because it's a “tough business to survive in. There is a lot of back stabbing, lots of drugs and dishonesty.” Richard got burned out and decided to change the course in his life, but he did reveal that he couldn't give up music since it “soothes the savage beast. And we all have a little savage beast in us.”
