Going from unemployed to employed
Being unemployed does not make you a bad person. Although there are a number of people who are unemployed, I keep seeing statements like “I did everything right.” The fact that you are unemployed does not mean that you did anything wrong. You are not a bad person if you are unemployed. The truth is you are just unemployed. Want another truth? You will get a job, although it may take time.

As a person who created more than 20 variations of resumes, networked, and became a resume windmill for many hours a day, I understand. The ups and downs of job hunting are intense. I applied to jobs I had no chance of landing to bargain basement “get through it jobs.” At the end of the day, both jobs landed me in the same place, looking for another job.

Losing a job is often an incredibly stressful life event. How will you pay the mortgage? How will you pay your bills? How will you eat? All of these are valid questions, but fixating on these questions may take you away from your job hunt and send you into a fear driven spiral.

A job is important, but it is not everything. People are hired and fired every day. So, below are some tips to motivate the unemployed to take control of their employment search.

The Unemployed to Employed Tips

  1. Always remember, your current assignment is to get a job. If you were at work and your boss gave you an assignment, you would figure it out. Research everything including potential employers, resume tips, networking tips, interview tips, and keep your mind sharp. If there is an area you would like to work in, learn everything you can about it. When the job comes around, you want to hit the ground running.

  2. Take care of yourself. When you are looking for a job it is important to get rest, exercise, and eat right. When you get your next job, do you want to be exhausted and worn down or ready to go?

  3. Craft an Employment Plan. First, get organized and get out there. Craft a binder with your resume, references, and maintain a list of jobs you submitted and follow up.

  4. Create a side project. Yes, you are dedicating most of your time to job hunting; however, a side project could easily develop into a money maker. A side project will keep you productive, sane, and tapping into your overall purpose.

  5. Have another set of eyes review your resume and cover letter (or a few sets of eyes). There are a number of services, career counselors, and friends that are ready and willing to give feedback. Take advantage of these resources.

  6. Take some time to consider what you want to do with your life. What did you like doing as a kid and why? What are your strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits? Have you taken any free assessment tests? What projects did you enjoy in the past and why?

  7. Network, Network, Network. Get into events and get connected, but make sure you obey the laws of networking. If you are unfamiliar with the rules of networking, research the laws of networking. Since you are unemployed and you don't have the cash to get into the big events, you may think this will stop you from being able to network. There are still opportunities out there. Consider volunteering at local networking events or splitting your networking costs with a group and sharing notes about your connections. You don't have to be at some big event to network, you can network every day and everywhere.

    a.  Be prepared for the question: What do you do? Create an elevator pitch including who you are, what you do,  how you can help the other party, and what he or she should do next. Networking is not about begging for a job, it is about crafting a long-term professional relationship.

  8. As for the interview, be confident. Nothing is as attractive to an employer as a combination of confidence, knowledge, and clear communications skills.

  9. As for keeping the job, that is another article. However, if you research how to get a job, you should probably research how to keep the job.
