Lawrence J. Morris, Catholic University

Morris brings with him more than 29 years of legal experience. Immediately before accepting the position with Catholic University, Morris served as the civilian chief of advocacy for the US Army Headquarters, during which time he was in charge of supervising the advocacy education that was delivered to about 600 Army prosecutors and defense counsel.

Prior to that, as an active duty Army colonel, Morris functioned as the chief prosecutor for the Office of Military Commissions. In this position, he was responsible for litigating cases of accused terrorists who were being held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 2007, he functioned as the co-executive director of the multinational Law and Order Task Force in Baghdad, where he worked to better Iraq's legal system. Morris was presented with a Bronze Star for his efforts.


Morris also served as the general counsel of the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. In 1997 he was a professor and chairman of the Criminal Law Department of the US Army Judge Advocate General's School, on the campus of the University of Virginia. The school offers accredited graduate legal education to both military and civilian attorneys within the armed forces.

Additionally, Morris has worked as an adjunct professor at a number of law schools, including the Catholic University School of Law. He authored ''Military Justice: A Guide to the Issues,'' which was published in 2010, as well as other articles and training publications that are frequently used by US military prosecutors and defenders.

Morris has an MS in national strategy from the National Defense University and an LLM in military law from the Judge Advocate General's School. Morris earned his JD from Marquette University's law school in 1982. He also holds a BA in political science and journalism from Marquette University.

The Catholic University of America was established by the US Catholic bishops in 1887 and serves as the national university of the Catholic Church. The university, which was initially formed as a graduate research center, has provided undergraduate courses since 1904. The Washington, DC.-based university is the only university within the US ''with ecclesiastical faculties granting canonical degrees in three disciplines.''
