LSAT and Student Potential

Many colleges have already found that in making the SAT and ACT optional, a more diverse applicant pool has emerged. The same could be true of the LSAT, but there is still the question of whether potential law students can be assessed properly without the LSAT. Those in favor of dropping the LSAT requirement argue that the test is an inaccurate gauge of student potential. Students who attend expensive LSAT preparation courses report a five to ten point jump in test scores, which lends to the argument that the test is teachable. Thus, some suggest that the test measures the ability to study specific material, rather than measuring skills that are necessary for success in law school. If that is the case, then students who cannot afford the LSAT preparation classes are at a definite disadvantage. It could also be said that the test is not conducive to working students who may not be able to take time off due to financial concerns. Students with disabilities could also be at a disadvantage during the three to four hour test. Even with accommodations, the length of the test can create additional difficulties for some.

On the other side, there are those who assert that the LSAT is the only thing that prevents law schools from accepting students based on ability to pay rather than on academic merit. Without the LSAT, schools can recruit on financial qualifications alone, without taking a hit to their rankings. Some law schools already have the ability to admit their own undergraduates without adhering to any LSAT requirements. The suggestion that schools could take advantage of students and allow them to rack up debt to pay for law school, whether they are likely to succeed or not is a viable argument that should also be considered. However, the ultimate decision rests in the hands of the ABA.
