Chua was born and raised in the United States by strict Chinese parents. She opted to take the same approach in raising her two daughters and describes her approaches in her memoir. Play dates, sleepovers, computer games, and school plays were not part of her daughters' lives. Instead, her children were expected to follow firm academic and extracurricular schedules, which included up to six hours of piano practice in a day. Chua tells of her seven year old daughter playing the piano for hours at a time without bathroom or water breaks. She also explains that only hard work and top scores were accepted. Her children were expected to bring home all A's and were reprimanded for anything less than perfect. Chua recalls rejecting a hand-made birthday card from her daughter because it was lacking in effort.

In the United States, many have responded to the parenting methods represented in the Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother with disapproval. The reason for this disapproval is likely twofold. First of all, parents within the United States generally believe in promoting a healthy self-esteem through encouragement rather than through setting rigid expectations. Children are seen as individuals who must search to find their own specialized interests and talents. Second, Chua puts many on the defense by criticizing the typical parenting skills of those in the United States. She defends her position on tough parenting by suggesting that many Asians disapprove of lax Western parenting styles that fail to prepare children for the real world. Chua also castigates Americans for praising their children for the ''lowest of tasks,'' rather than pushing them to do better.

While it's unlikely that there will ever be any solid agreement on the ''best'' child-rearing techniques, it is certain that a book that addresses the issue will certainly get people talking. And as long as there are different parenting techniques, there will be debate over which is the healthiest and most productive for the child.
