Last week, students at several top colleges, such as Boston University's School of Law, received startling messages stating that having read any of the published documents on the vilified website would potentially make one ''a risk when it comes to sensitive material.''

''Above the Law'' posted an email coming from Boston University's Career Development office that proposed that students may be in violation of federal law if they were to link to, or even read the documents.

A transcript of an interview conducted by the grassroots campaign for transparency in government, DemocracyNow.org, implicates a supposed alumnus of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, who now works at the State Department, in relaying the aforementioned type of information to his alma mater.

The alleged e-mail claims that Columbia's SIPA ''received a call from [an alumnus] who is working at the State Department. He asked us to pass along the following information to students who will be applying for jobs in the federal government, since all would require a background investigation and in some instances a security clearance.''

However, a poll conducted by ''Above The Law,'' asking it's readers their opinions on the emails, found that 55% of responders believed the warnings were unnecessarily worrying law students, while 38% thought the information, however sensational, may have been worthy of some attention.

On Friday, ''Above The Law'' updated the story, citing a new email sent out to employees of the Department of Commerce last week that claims the information published on Wikileaks is still ''Classified'' and is ''not authorized for downloading, viewing, printing, processing copying, or transmitting via non-classified Government-issued computers, laptops, blackberries, or other communication devices...''

In any case, law students may have to check their behavior in the future, or prepare for endless debates on the ethics of upholding such an infringing government.
