Introduction

If you're interested in a legal career, then you have several options. From legal clerks to judges, and from police officers to corrections officers, the variety of legal careers available may seem overwhelming at first. The key is to determine your strengths and weaknesses, your career goals, and so on. That will allow you to narrow down the types of careers available in the legal world.

According to previous estimates, the employment among lawyers will grow roughly 13% from 2008-2018. The job market looks fairly promising for lawyers and other legal careers. Some of the factors that are influencing this trend include the population growth, a higher demand for services related to the law, and new regulations related to corporate compliance. This means that it's a solid time to pursue law careers. Due to the legal clinics being more available and affordable for the Middle Class, this will create a moderate amount of jobs for lawyers.

So what is preventing extraordinary job growth for lawyers? More companies will use the services of paralegals and accounting firms to conduct some of the tasks that lawyers have traditionally done. This will basically prevent the job growth for lawyers from skyrocketing. However, keep in mind that the rate of job growth is still expected to increase faster than those of other occupations!

Description

Here are some descriptions for various types of occupations related to law:

Attorneys: Attorneys can work for companies, private firms, or government agencies. There are various attorney employment areas that they can specialize in, such as criminal, civil, and family law. Each of these areas is related to different types of issues.

Correction Officers: The function of these workers is to maintain order within correctional facilities. Correction Officers ensure that those staying in the facilities (and those visiting them) remain safe.

Court Reporters: The responsibility of these reporters is to create precise records of all court occurrences that are related to a legal case. That includes court hearings, testimonies, and depositions. The work of Court Reporters, like those in lawyer careers is crucial, as the decisions that judges make frequently depends on how precise the transcripts of Court Reporters are.

Forensic Scientist: While there job isn't as glamorous as portrayed on various TV shows, it's nonetheless important. Their responsibility is to evaluate evidence that has been collected at a crime scene. Forensic Scientists then make conclusions about how the evidence is related to a crime, and share their discoveries with police departments and lawyers. Frequently they appear in court in order to reveal their discoveries.

Judges: The responsibilities of judges are to preside over legal cases, and to make legal rulings by interpreting the law. The two primary varieties of judges are trial and appellate judges. While trial judges make decisions based on evidence, appellate judges review if those decisions contain any mistakes.

Paralegals: These workers provide lawyers with assistance to represent their clients better. They help in creating things such as documents and briefs, and communicate to an attorney's clients.

Private Investigators: These workers help governments, companies, and individuals to locate facts. Such facts can be related to either criminal or personal matters. The tasks of PIs include surveillance and examinations of financial records.

Before choosing a particular law field to specialize in (such as attorney employment), it's highly advisable that you review the features, pros, and cons of those that you're interested in. While a particular law specialization may seem quite attractive at first, you should avoid selecting it as a career until you examine the positive and negative aspects of the specialization. You should also consider the job outlook for a particular specialization. One that's promising now might not be a decade or two from now. So the bottom line is that you must do your homework!

Requirements

The job requirements can vary significantly among various legal occupations. Both educational attainment and experience are crucial for the various occupations related to legal fields. For example, those seeking lawyer employment typically complete a four-year college or university degree, and three years of law school; and must then pass a (written) bar exam. Also, simply being admitted into the majority of law schools is quite difficult. However, other legal occupations such as Paralegals only require one to earn an associate's degree or bachelor's degree. And some employers only require paralegals to complete the on-the-job training that they provide.

After choosing a particular law specialty, it's advisable to earn an associates degree first. Afterwards, you'll have a better sense about whether a law specialty is the right one for you. You might decide at that time to switch your law careers specialty, or study a field outside of law.

Job Locations

Virtually as varied as the number of legal professions, is where workers in those professions work. The most obvious location is various types of legal courts. However, that's only one of several locations related to legal work. Forensic Scientists collect evidence at crime scenes, and then examine the evidence in laboratories. Those with attorney jobs have their “day in court,” but spend a significant amount of time in their law offices and in the field. The “office” of Correction Officers is the local or national system of prisons.
