All United States jurisdictions need lawyers to have completed a bar exam to get an attorney license. This license allows the law graduate to practice law in these jurisdictions. In other jurisdictions, an applicant for a law practice is required to have a degree in law from an accredited law school like Harvard law school or Yale law school. Completing the regular continuing legal education is another key principal in both the jurisdiction requirements for legal practice and the academia context of practicing law.

For a student aiming at being a law clerk, he or she requires to take a law clerk program in a law school under a principal renowned the ‘Rule six.’ In the United States, a graduate of good moral background is easily accepted in a 4-year ‘Rule Six’ clerk program. Upon completion, he or she may be employed promptly in a law firm. Often this can also be with a judge for a prescribed weekly practice and study a specific legal course and a tutor. Upon successful completion of Rule Six clerk program, a law clerk can be admitted to the Washington State Bar Association.

In law school, prospective attorneys earn a juris doctor or Doctor of jurisprudence. This is actually in the United States, but in other countries, prospective lawyers study bachelor of law. However the law student earns an undergraduate degree in law followed by an LLM or Masters of Law and even a doctor in law. American lawyers study ‘masters of laws’ to gain relevant and advanced knowledge in specific legal dispensaries. Such could be tax, corporate law, criminal law, and etcetera. The American legal studies departments are making radical changes in the system and are currently creating post–doctoral degrees such as S.J.D or JSD well known as (Scientiae Juris Doctor or doctor of scientific law).

The highest law degree in the United States is the JSD and it is highly regarded in many law schools. The degree is available in leading law schools like Yale Law School, which ranks as the top American law school, followed by Harvard law school and Columbia law school. For a student to qualify for these legal studies, he should have good grades in humanities and arts. These subjects substantively cover basic issues regarding society, social structure and the government.

Though the Doctor of scientific law is a rare award in the education system, it is a highly coveted and sought discipline in law by most attorneys. It is also a very important academia objective by highly ranking legal experts, attorneys who hold high credential in legal studies. The top law schools take up only a few students for the program. Normally only 4 to 5 students are selected and they are required to have an excellent profile of published articles on the program.
