Maintaining good personal contacts comes naturally to some. It is like second nature. For other, however, it requires a lot of conscious effort. Apart from social values, staying connected helps in various ways. More so if you are looking for a job. Your contacts can assist you in your job search.

People often think that their present contacts will help them get the right job, but it may not work every time. The more contacts you have the better your chances are of getting a job. You could apply focused networking where you focus on contacts in a particular industry. However, universal networking—which could be purely social and may take more time—can help you much more in your job search. Your contacts could be anyone: they may include alumni, former colleagues, agents, bankers, friends, clients, business associates, relatives, teachers, etc.

To get real mileage out of your networking it is important that you remain connected at all times. Your connections should be in place whenever you need them and you never know when you would need them. It is always advisable to have an active career network all the times, whether you need it or not.

Here are a few tips on effective networking:

  1. Decide to network—The first step to networking is to decide that you want to network. You have to make a decision to put your energy and efforts to this.

  2. Organize yourself—Make a list of all your contacts. If you have access to a computer, putting them in a spreadsheet would be your best option. You can enter information like name, company name, contact details, mail id, etc. Also, keep business cards separately in one place, organized alphabetically, or any other way which suits you.

  3. With whom to network—Anybody who can help you with your job search should be in your list of contacts. You could start with your family, friends, neighbors, and then catch up with colleagues, bosses, former co-workers, and people whom you meet at workshops, conferences, etc.

  4. Set Goals—You need to set goals for yourself. Based on the time available to you, you can have a goal of adding five new contacts every week to your list and maybe follow up with five old contacts each week

  5. List Contacts—Make a list of all those with whom you want to get connected, especially people from your industry. Then find a way to meet these people. Make a note of things you would want to talk about with these people so that you do not miss the opportunity to talk about specifics when you meet them.

  6. Communicate—This is very crucial. Stay in touch. You could use any means convenient to you. You can send an email, call the person, use text message, or if the time permits even go and meet them personally; but stay connected. Keep in touch regularly and not only when you require help or when you are laid off.

  7. Share Resources—Don’t expect all the help from your contacts. You also need to contribute. If you find any interesting update on the job market or the industry, make sure to send them to your contacts. This will help in resource building.

  8. Increase Contacts—Always try to get a few more names before you finish any meeting. This will help in increasing your circle of contacts.

  9. Keep Track—Keep track of all your contacts. You should know who is where and who is doing what.

  10. Online Career Networking—The Internet has made networking much simpler than what it was earlier. With many sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and many other such sites, networking does not require much effort.
Networking will not only assist you in getting a job; your contacts can help you in many more ways. They can update you about the industry you want to work for. Sometimes they are a great source of inside information about any company you might want to work for. They can review your resume, give you job advice, update you on the international market scenario—the list could be endless. So what are you waiting for? Get connected now.

Some common places to initiate networking:

Clubs
