The largest firms in the world were ranked in order of the litigation revenue generated. This is the first time they have been ranked in this way. The figures revealed which US and UK-headquartered firms have the largest litigation practices. It also highlights those that have placed a high-level of importance on building international disputes capabilities.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom topped the list generating more revenue that any other firm in the world in 2007 from litigation, arbitration, and disputes.

However, when you like at the findings for revenue per lawyer, Skadden's ranking drops to number five with its revenue per lawyer at $1.33m. New York-based firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore landed at number one on both lists: revenue per lawyer and revenue per partner, posting $1.69m and $8.45m respectively.

U.S. firms dominated the The Lawyer's research findings and illustrated the extensive size of the U.S. litigation market.

The only UK firms to make into the top 50 are Clifford Chance; Freshfields, Bruckhaus, Deringer; Herbert Smith, and A&O with litigation revenues of £199m, £177m, £151m, and £122m respectively. This placed these four UK firms in nineteenth, 27th, 35th and 46th places.

Linklaters, Lovells, and Clyde & Co are a few other UK firms with significant litigation practices, but were unsuccessful in making the list of top 50.

Tim House, A&O global litigation head, told The Lawyer:
''The US is by far the largest and most litigious legal market in the world, so you'd expect US-based firms to have built the largest domestic litigation departments. Recognising the factors that make litigation such an important part of a US firm, we added a top-tier US litigation team to our New York practice just over five years ago, and the continued development of that is a key component of our growth strategy.''
The figures were based on 2007's financial results for the U.S. firms and the 2007-08 results for UK firms. According to the article, many litigators predict an increase in cross-border litigation and despite the expected increase some firms still face low levels of disputes cases in certain practice areas.
