You might be asking yourself how you can get everything done in the next month or two and still get away for a stress-free vacation. If you're like other professionals, you'll find that taking a restful, rejuvenating vacation is really a matter of good timing and organization (even if you have kids).

It's a fact that many U.S. workers who get vacation time don't use it all during the year. According to a Yahoo! HotJobs survey, 49% of workers said they felt "burned out" by their jobs, and surprisingly, many didn't use their vacation time as an antidote. "Out of 1,800 people surveyed, 45% didn't use all of their vacation time in 2006, and 39% said they were too tired to take a 'real' vacation during their time off." According to a survey conducted by Expedia.com, about 35% of American adults don't take all of the paid vacation days granted by their employers.

Juggling busy schedules can be a hassle, especially when there are impending deadlines or time-consuming projects looming. Planning for a vacation can be exhausting and time-consuming itself. So what you want to do is plan your vacation well ahead of time. Think about where you want to go, what activities you plan to do, and, most of all, how to prepare the people at your office for your absence.

Sometimes preparing the boss and fellow coworkers for the time you're going to be away can be more stressful than taking the time off. Here are some tips suggested by CareerBuilder.com for preparing coworkers for your upcoming vacation:
  • Give plenty of notice for your vacation dates. Put in for your vacation before all the good dates fill up.

  • Schedule your vacation around big projects. You don't want to have to rush a project before going away or rush back and have to jump immediately into one.

  • Cross-train coworkers. Training fellow employees to do your job in your absence will help you enjoy your time off.

  • Give an alternate contact number (phone or email). Let someone else pick up the slack temporarily while you're gone. When that person goes on vacation, you can return the favor. Pick someone reliable.

  • Choose a vacation that is well suited to your needs. If you're highly stressed, make sure to take a relaxing vacation. If things are slow at work, choose something exciting that might be more of an adventure. Don't, however, pick something that's going to make you more exhausted when you come back from vacation.

  • When you have to check in with the office, work out a schedule with your boss beforehand and establish a limit on the times you need to check in.

  • Relax while you're gone. Don't be constantly worrying about problems at the office. And don't feel guilty about taking the time off. It's your vacation. You've earned it.
After you plan where you're going to go and prepare your coworkers for your time off, make sure to plan your finances and protect your home. Include vacation money in your financial planning. Shop around for bargains, and plan to use traveler's checks. Make sure you have good locks on your doors and windows, and ask a neighbor to watch the house while you're away. And if you have kids, try to find hotels or resorts that are amicable to children.

David and Kris Samuels, both prominent and busy lawyers in Los Angeles, recommend the Westin Hotel and the Hyatt Resort located in Maui. As parents of three small children under the age of six, they say these hotels are particularly kid-friendly, with their "kiki" camps for kids, and great getaways for total relaxation. Said Mrs. Samuels, "Just bring plenty of sunscreen and Benadryl and a portable DVD player for the car or the plane."

Taking a vacation during the summer months can help you reenergize, recuperate, and renew your outlook. Although planning a vacation can at times be stressful, you'll most likely find that your time away was well worth it. Taking time off will help you feel less "burned out," and you will feel more motivated, refreshed, and ready to take on new work challenges.

Chip Lambert, a successful paralegal and real estate investor, said it best: "I find it essential to take time off each year for myself and my family. I just wouldn't have it any other way."
