According to its website, the school's academic program is "designed to help students acquire the four basic characteristics of the well-educated lawyer: knowledge, professionalism, a broad perspective on the social implications of legal issues, and the ability to communicate effectively. Fundamental to each of these characteristics is the development of certain habits of mind crucial to thinking like a lawyer: clarity, precision, and analytical skill." The school's 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio helps achieve this goal by providing students with academic support and allowing them to develop professional relationships with their professors.

All full-time day students at the University of Maryland School of Law must fulfill the Cardin Requirement, which is described as the "School of Law's most concrete expression of its commitment to the pursuit of justice." To fulfill this requirement, students must provide legal services to those who would not normally have access to them in order to graduate. Clinical law courses and legal theory and practice courses have helped students and faculty contribute more than 110,000 hours of free legal services to local citizens every year. Through live client representation, students gain necessary experience and help others out at the same time.

School administrators acknowledge the fact that legal writing is very different from any other form of writing, so the school has created required and elective opportunities that teach students how to write as attorneys. Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research (LAWR) is a required program in which students take a three-semester series of courses designed to teach them how to find, analyze, and apply legal authority, as well as how to communicate their findings orally and in writing. Students must also take an advanced writing course that entails writing an extensive paper analyzing a particular legal or law-related program. In terms of electives, students can choose from more than 40 upper-level writing courses. A writing center is also available to help students advance their writing techniques and abilities.

While pursuing their J.D.s, students can choose from a list of six specialty programs designed to cater to their interests. Programs available include Business Law; Clinical Law; Intellectual Property Law; International Law; Legislation, Politics, and Public Policy; and Women, Leadership, and Equality.

Dual-degree programs are available, as well. In order to qualify for a dual program, candidates must meet the admissions and degree-requirement criteria for both schools hosting the program. Students can choose from among the following programs:
  • J.D./M.A. in Criminal Justice
  • J.D./M.A. in Liberal Arts
  • J.D./M.B.A.
  • J.D./M.C.P. (Master of Community Planning)
  • J.D./M.P.H. (Master of Public Health)
  • J.D./M.S.W. (Master of Social Work)
  • J.D./M.S. in Toxicology Risk Assessment and Environmental Law
  • J.D./M.S. in Nursing
  • J.D./Pharm.D. (Doctor of Pharmacology)
  • J.D./M.P.P. (Master of Public Policy)
  • J.D./M.P.M. (Master of Public Management)
  • J.D./Ph.D. in Public Policy
Through the Asper Fellowship Program, students can obtain credit for supervised law-related work with judges (both state and federal) and with attorneys employed by governmental and nonprofit organizations. Named for late University of Maryland School of Law professor Lewis D. Asper, the fellowships are intended to "expose students to the practical workings of the legal system and to help students develop insights into the process of judicial decision making or the skills and values required for the practice of law. Through this exposure, students should have the opportunity to enhance their legal writing skills."

According to Dean Karen Rothenberg, the school of law's first priority is turning its law students into exceptional lawyers. "One constant in the history of the University of Maryland School of Law is our pride in our identity—we are the best at what we do, and we provide our students with a distinctive educational experience," she stated.
