Adopting from a shelter may be the "right" thing to do, but since I only pay retail, that just won't work. I have done a lot of research on the subject—that is, one of my assistants has—and I had no idea that some industrious dog breeders with discriminatingly good taste have created a whole new category of designer dogs: hybrids. There are several types of recognized hybrids, including the puggle (pug and beagle), the labradoodle (lab and poodle), and the schnoodle (schnauzer and poodle). After some soul-searching, I've decided on the goldendoodle!

A goldendoodle is the offspring of a golden retriever and a poodle—a most marvelous hybrid! I found a breeder just north of Santa Barbara who has a litter of mini goldendoodles who will be ready to leave home in a few weeks. (A mini goldendoodle has a miniature poodle as a parent.) And what's $2,000 when you're buying yourself some love? Hey, there are matchmakers who charge more than that!

Before I read about hybrid dogs, I always thought that anything less than a purebred was just a mutt! But evidently a first-generation cross between two unrelated purebred lines comes out healthier and develops better than a puppy from the line of either parent. Goldendoodles are friendly, intelligent, affectionate, and easy to train. Of course I'll be hiring someone for that. I can't let anything happen to my expensive bamboo floors.

A goldendoodle can resemble a shaggy-looking retriever or a poodle with relaxed curls; I hope the breeder has one that falls somewhere in between. The coat may come out cream-colored, golden, apricot, chocolate, gray, or black. Mini goldendoodles weigh in at about 25 to 45 pounds. But here's the best part: they are light-shedding to non-shedding and can be hypoallergenic! Both my custom-made furniture and my sinuses will appreciate that.

So this weekend, my BFF and I are taking an Amtrak train from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. It's a trip that takes a little longer than two and a half hours. The weather has been beautiful all week; if it stays that way, the views will be breathtaking on the ride up. A round-trip ticket costs just $64. I booked us rooms at the Santa Barbara Inn for only $699 per night—a real steal for the view of a south-facing beach off a private balcony. I've never played a video game in my life, but since each room comes with a flat-screen television and a Nintendo video game system, maybe this will be a good time to learn.

After I get out of the Jacuzzi, of course.
