<<That does not mean NALSA is not academic at all. "We do plenty to help students outline, read over memos and briefs, but we also work within the surrounding communities," Young explained. It is rewarding to see how her efforts with the organization help people living in the area, she said. The association is committed to the recruitment, retention, and success of Native American law students and promotes the study and development of Indian law.

One of Young's biggest responsibilities as the association's president is fundraising. This year, Young helped raise $5,000 at a silent auction, which included a raffle for a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Young joined the organization as a first-year law student because she had recently moved to New Mexico from California, and she wanted to feel like she was part of a community, she said. She is also a member of the Mexican American Law Students Association.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in community studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Young wanted to work for a nonprofit organization. However, she soon realized that she did not have as much experience as her competition.

She thought that a law degree would provide her with the necessary tools to make positive changes in communities. As a lawyer, Young will have the ability to make a difference in society, which is one of the most appealing aspects of the profession, she said. "The law can change, and I have the ability to influence and change it," she said.

Her favorite class has been nonprofit organizations. "It is a hands-on class where I can design a nonprofit and compile the documents I would need to file with both state and federal agencies," she explained. Young said the class was intriguing because she learned how to establish a nonprofit and also how organizations legally maintain nonprofit status.

Young has always been passionate about public interest work, she said. "Growing up, I saw how so many people lack a voice in the political and legal fields, and I want to be able to take the tools I have learned and become an asset to my community, and I can do that best through public interest work."

Young said her grandmother expressed concern because public interest positions typically offer lower salaries than those in other practice areas. But Young is not in it for the money. "I enjoy working with people who have real day-to-day problems. Everyone needs a chance to be heard, and if I can assist them in finding that voice and making a change in their life, then I am happy with that," she said.

Young has spent two summers interning with public interest law firms. In 2005, she worked for Legal Services of Northern California, a nonprofit organization that works to defeat poverty. "The experience was great. I learned a lot about California housing, as well as federal supplemental income," she said.

Last summer, Young worked for DNA People's Legal Services, a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to low-income residents living near the Navajo Nation. She landed the internship after attending the Rocky Mountain Career Fair in Denver, CO. "I just applied so I could go to Denver (I had never been to Colorado), and I ended up with a summer job," she said.

But the job offered a lot more than she expected. "The internship was the best one I have ever participated in. I was able to do client intakes and manage files [while] doing the research and writing legal documents and memoranda," she said.

Young said she owes thanks to her boyfriend, who has been supportive and encouraging throughout her law school career. "My boyfriend, Alexander Beattie, he has kept me in school, helping me understand topics and reassuring my choice to stay in law school and reminding me why I am here," she said.
