<<Clapper, who goes by Patti, has worked for Levine & Stewart for nearly 12 years. "We literally handle everything except taxes and immigration," said Clapper. "I handle all the non-real estate matters, all types of litigation—domestic, landlord/tenant, contractor problems, personal injuries, estate planning, minor criminal offenses, and corporate matters."

During her senior year of high school, Clapper said that she took a class in law and justice because she thought she would be interested in law. "My grandmother brought me an ad from Central Carolina Community College about its paralegal program. I knew I was going to pretty much be putting myself through school, so a two-year program sounded like a great idea to me," said Clapper.

Clapper describes paralegals as the glue that holds everything together. "Some clients can be difficult because they think they are your only client and some just want someone to listen to them. I sometimes refer to this as 'babysitting.' I also find myself 'babysitting' my boss a lot, keeping him on task, making sure he is calling clients back, and keeping deadlines. I know other paralegals face these same challenges, it's just part of the job," said Clapper.

Clapper was awarded her Certified Paralegal certification from National Association of Legal Assistants in 1996, Advance Paralegal Certification in litigation from NALA in 2004, and her North Carolina State Bar Certification in 2006. Her employer presented her with a 10-year service plaque in 2005. Additionally, she has served as Senior Editor, Treasurer, District Director, and, most recently, Annual Seminar Co-chair for the North Carolina Paralegal Association.

Based on her years working for plaintiffs' attorneys, Clapper said that she believes that the most important issues facing the law community are women's rights and their financial ability to obtain legal assistance—and the rights of plaintiffs. "The legislature just tried to pass laws to limit the rights of patients when it comes to medical malpractice; however, they were not successful. Why should doctors' and insurance companies' liability be limited when they are responsible for an injury to someone?" said Clapper. "And I would [also] like to see more free or low-cost programs to help people who truly need an attorney's help to protect themselves."

According to Clapper, membership in professional associations is an invaluable part of a paralegal's career; and she belongs to several. "The two biggest benefits to me are the friendships I have made and the resources available to me as a member. Ten years ago, I hardly knew any paralegals. Now, through my involvement with the association, I have made new and lasting friends," said Clapper.

Would Clapper do anything differently if she could? "Sometimes I regret that I didn't go to law school. But when I remember the phone calls my boss gets at home after hours, or the irate clients, I am glad that I can pass them off to him!" said Clapper.

Clapper's advice for students preparing to become paralegals is to get an education, whether it's a two-year or four-year program. "Strive to get your national and state certifications, and use the resources available to you through your local paralegal associations," said Clapper. "Some [associations], such as the North Carolina Paralegal Association, offer student memberships. This is a great way for you to meet other paralegals, ask questions, and maybe even find a job."

While Clapper enjoys her chosen career, her true passion is North Carolina State Wolfpack sports. "My blood bleeds NC State Wolfpack red. Ask me about my NC State tattoo!" said Clapper. Also an '80s music fan and a Scooby Doo trivia nut, Clapper lives in Apex with her husband, Beanie; her two children, 12-year-old Evin and 9-year-old Carly; and their two cats, Misty and Brandy.
